HELP!!! My PureDisk Diskpool keeps going down

I am using netbackup 7.0 deduplication storage server . Have 1 master (also media) and 1 media.

I rebooted the master server (after entering some license) and after that the diskpool issue started happening. At first i thought it was a licensing issue as I just entered in some license keys. However have reverted the changes but the issue persists.

bperror -disk keeps giving this error: 
Task sessin on start request on server PureDisk:my_media_server on my_media_server got an unexpected
error.
 
I try to run nbdevconfig -changestate to UP and it just does not work. Have tried rebooting,restarting services,still down. As fas as i can tell there is no issues on the disk. I have another media server connected to the same san with no issues. backup fails immediately with storage unit unavailable errors. Backing up to tape using the same media server is ok. The other thing is my media server.
 
Am on hold on the support live queue for like an hour.....if anyone has any troubleshooting tips please help .thanks

First, is there enough disk space on /tmp? You don't mention OS, but postgresql will not start unless it can store its temp files.

Look in <install path>/logs for your PDDE. Does spoold, spad log anything interesting?

What does the general Problems report say?

If Windows, check Windows events. Anti-virus, firewalls?

Changes made to running config, but not made permanent prior reboot?

Many possible sources of errors...

1] Make sure all the services related to MSDP are started in addition to other NBU services:
a] PostgreSQL Server 8.3
b] NetBackup Deduplication Engine
c] NetBackup Deduplication Manager

2] To check the communication between the media server and MSDP:
<install_drive>\Program files\Veritas\Netbackup\bin\admincmd\bpstsinfo -si -sp PureDisk: -sn <MSDP_MEDIA_SERVER_NAME>
e.g: bpstsinfo -si -sp PureDisk: -sn NBU-MSDP-SERVER
This should give an o/p like:

Selects the state of the disk pool or disk volume. Specify UP to up the disk pool or disk volume and DOWN to down the disk pool or disk volume.
The RESET option does the following:
Sets the internal state to UP (both disk volume and disk pool)
Sets committed_space to ZERO (disk volume only)
Sets the precommitted space to ZERO (disk volume only)
 
4] Any events in the event viewer related to MSDP

Hi Sachin,

 

I have a case logged with support Case 600-600-908 .The thing is the very next day my disk pool came up on it's own.

They have identified this as NOT license issue but related to http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH130869

"After Startup of NetBackup on a server with Media Server De-Duplication Pool (MSDP) configured the PureDisk Volume will be down until spoold's Connection Manager has completed it's startup - this can take an extended amount of time."

As far as I can tell there is no fix. I'm trying to establish the following:

 

  1. What is the estimated amount of time for the PureDisk volume to come up after a restart of netbackup services?
  2. If this is based on the number of Tlogs outstanding how do we reduce or managed this growth in tlogs?
  3.  Is there any tuning configurations on change in configuration of the Puredisk Volume size on number of clients/jobs/policy which will affect this?
  4. Any workaround or EBB planned to reduce the timings for this? Based on our estimate the timing was about 17 hours to get the puredisk volume up the last time.

I'm going through my spoold logs to check on this throughly. There is a backline /engr person  working with support. They have also told me to apply 7.01 to fix http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH128694

Thus we are waiting on confirmation for the next steps.

Sounds like an issue addressed in ET2073963.. have you upgraded to v7.0.1 yet? I believe they have rolled the EEB/ET above into v7.0.1..

Have checked on that Etrack with support and they mentioned thats does not apply to my scenario..i noticed my msdp is unusually slow with processing those tlogs in the queue folder. also thinga like  garbage collection take very long as compared to the other MSDP server

Hi All,

 

Anybody good with reading spoold logs? it's been 4 mths and this issue is still bugging us. Support are saying it's a disk i/o issue however iostats are looking normal..my controllers are not busy and there is an avg of only 4-6MB of reads/writes during the time the disk pool is down. I do see the below errors in spoold though,(have replaced the servername by MSDP-Server and IP).

 

Anyone know what "ERR25099: Message transmission failed: sent -1 instead of 36 bytes (broken pipe)" means or what "INFO [46]: (unknown) Task 29 [thread 46] for 10.x.x.x:37532 failed with unknown error." what task29 is referring to?

My disk spool remains down and I got error 213 during backups. After manually running a nbdevconfig changestate to "UP" was I able to proceed with backup. So without manual intervention the diskpool does not come up.

 

My other netbackup services are fine and I can run backups to tape as well as my other MSDP(windows ) is ok - can run backups to the puredisk pool without issue

I also get alot of error 11 when running a truss command against the spad process
