Hi,

I am attempting to restore a SQL flat file 80 GB in size, from a Prod server to a Test server.  Both are Windows Servers.  Prod(64 bit), Test(32 bit).  I am using Netbackup 6.5 console to restore the file.  I set Source Client (Prod) and Destination Client (Test).  The file restore almost completed at 79 GB and failed.  Here is the client log.  Any help would be appreciated.

One note: The Test server is new and I have added to the Netbackup catalog right before attempting to restore.  So it's never been backed   up before today.

09:17:28 (5270755.001) (5270755.001) WRN - can't create file: H:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Backup\TMS_NEW\Restore\TMS_NEW_backup_201010121200.bak (WIN32 3: The system cannot find the path specified. )

It's my understanding that NetBackup will not create any paths that aren't part of the restore itself.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your suggestion.  I have also attempted to restore to the root of H: and receive the same error.

Does Netbackup Catalog need to have a valid backup of the Test server before I can restore to it?  I am assuming Netbackup did not have any File System structure information, so it could not wirte the "restored" file to the server.  The Test server was new and I added to Netbackup policies before attempting to restore to it.

Thanks, Jon

No need to have a valid backup, but it's a good idea to perform a test backup to ensure successful comms.

Create NBU log folders on the Test server before trying another restore:

bpcd

tar

On media server: bpbrm and bptm

On master: bprd (nbu needs to be restarted to take effect)

to any suitable client as long as the NB client is installed & running on it, does not matter whether any form of backup has been carried out on it or not.

Can I just confirm:

Actual OS of production & test and NB version?

Also

source: H:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Backup\TMS_NEW\TMS_NEW_backup_201010121200.bak

destinations attempted: H:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Backup\TMS_NEW\Restore\TMS_NEW_backup_201010121200.bak
and H:\TMS_NEW_backup_201010121200.bak and that these paths actually do exist on the test server?

I am running Windows 2003 on Prod (64 bit) and Test (32 bit).  My Netbackup environment is 6.5 on the Master and Media servers.  Netbackup 6.5 client on the hosts.

I tried to create the directory structure on the Test server and run another restore.  Get the same error.

  • 08:54:11 (5273353.001) INF - Beginning restore from server carp to client tmspredb01-id.
  • 08:56:27 (5273353.001) TAR - H:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Backup\TMS_NEW\TMS_NEW_backup_201010131200.bak
  • 08:56:27 (5273353.001) (5273353.001) WRN - can't create file: H:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Backup\TMS_NEW\TMS_NEW_backup_201010131200.bak (WIN32 3: The system cannot find the path specified. )

The file is 80 GB, should I stop the restore now or wait 3 hours to finish?

inclined to cancel & look for a resolution!

I presume these restores are being carried out by the master?

Can you find a small file on the production box & try restores with that? Would make it easier to troubleshoot with the logs that Marianne suggested also.

***EDIT***

The small file would also help to test restores to various locations much more quickly e.g. C:\, H:\, H:\<path> etc etc & may help to isolate the issue (e.g. permissions as mentioned earlier).

I have reviewed the bpcd log and had no errors.  Shows valid_server: hostname suceeded.

There are no logs for TAR.

Yes, this restore is being carried out by the Netbackup Master server.

For the log files on the Master and Media server, that is run by another support team due to the SOLARIS OS.  I can only control the Windows / Intel side of the house.

Can I continue to troubleshoot effectively without those logs?
