2 media servers using the same disk storage unit (OST)

We run Netbackup 7.0.1 We we have a DataDomain OST disk storage unit(DSU) configured and we have 2 media servers configured to write to it. Last night one media server ran all of the jobs that went to that particular DSU the other media server sat idle. I was able to verify that the idle server can write to the DSU. How does netbackup determine which media server it uses to write to the DSU when 2 media servers are allowed to access the DSU?

The previous night both media servers ran jobs to the DSU

NetBackup balances backup jobs and storage usage among the media servers and disk pools. For each backup job, NetBackup chooses the least full disk volume and least busy media server.

It seems NetBackup thinks the idle server is really busy?  Or perhaps its paths to storage are down?

Depends of your configuration like if you have this 2 STU's under a SUG and the SUG is configured to run Prioritized backups it will always pick the top 1 STU and if the box can handle all the load is very likely will be the only one to be use. A solution to this can be to change this entry to Load Balance or Round Robin either one or the other will use both STU's or Media Servers.

Not sure if this is your scenario, let us know.

More than likely you have one credential per a media server.  If you have two OST devices, one media server probable has the credential for one OST device.  While the other media server probable has credentials for the other devices.

To configure load balancing, from the Admin Console.  Review the Credential of your Storage Servers, and put a check box for all the media servers you would like to access the OST devices.
