Indeed the Volume shadow copy service on the machine is disable.
The administrator of the machine do not want it enable.
Then you cannot backup System State or Shadow Copy Components. Windows (not NBU) needs VSS in order to backup these items.

Hello,
If you could please reply with the detailed status, that might help.
You can try TECH175175 and see if that applies. The tech note talks about this error occuring becuase the shadow copy service was disabled on the client.
Also have a look at the the bpbkar log on the client.

What is OS on the Client and the NBU version?
Can you use Windows backup to test backup to disk of Shadow Copy Components?
Check output of these commands from cmd:
vssadmin list writers
vssadmin list providers
If Client is W2003, check that latest MS hotfix is installed for VSS.

Hi,
Thanks all, for the good ideas, I will test them later.
Here the details status you asked:

This the is error that is causing the job to fail. its a VSS error. Follow what Marianne said and also check out the windows event viewer, see if anything else was logged there at that time.

Hi,
thanks for the reply.
Indeed the Volume shadow copy is disable.
The administrator of the machine do not want it enable.
I have added the server in the master server client attributes and uncheck the option "enable windows open file nbackups for this client", but I still get the error 50.
Thanks

Hi ,
Yes there is an error concerning the fact that the service is disable:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80070422, The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it..Operation:Instantiating VSS server

can you post the output of this command:
vssadmin list writers
01-24-2014 01:07 PM
The output of these commands makes it clear that something is very wrong with VSS on this machine.
Have you checked the Application event log as per first output?
Have you checked MS Support site for updated VSS hotfixes?

Hi,
Like I said before:

Hi All,
I'm wondering if we can use ALL_LOCAL_DRIVE and get system_state instead of volume Shadow Copy ?
thanks

This error means that you have a problem with Microsoft VSS.
Check the Application event log for more information.
Have you done this?
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
Have you checked VSS service?
Have you checked MS Support site for hotfixes? Or logged a call with Microsoft?
VSS is a Microsoft product. This is where you need to concentrate troubleshooting efforts.
