8.1.2 vxupdate Deployment failed with status 7226

Hi all!

Having some issues getting my clients upgraded to 8.1.2.  I successfully upgraded the Master Server and Media Servers a few weeks ago but upgrading the clients isn't going well.

I have spoken to support and they appear to have cut me off since telling them the upgrade succeeded when completely disabling McAfee endpoint protection.  Now I do agree that it appears more a McAfee issue as it worked when it was off but, I have followed all documents and have excluded everything Veritas recommends yet it still doesn't work.  I was expecting some help regarding the exclusions but they've told me to talk to McAfee and they have said they're not aware of any issues and that I need to apply the exclusions!

So, I am trying to find a solution so that I don't have to upgrade several hundred clients manually.  Disabling McAfee is not an option so I need to get this working with McAfee enabled.

-Manually upgrading on the client works fine, no issues at all
-We don't have any failure issues because of McAfee
-Logs have been looked at by Veritas Support but nothing found that could help, they first told me that they're aware vxupdate is broken and engineers are working on fixing it but then told me it was McAfee's fault.
-Deployment always ends with: 1: (7226) A supporting command failed. - no clue as to what though in the logs

Seems odd that we don't experience any issues with McAfee installed on all of our servers, during the last upgrade (7.5 to 7.7.2 using live update) there were also no issues.

Not pointing the blame at either side, just trying to find a solution and hoping someone else may have come across it.

Appreciate any help!
Thanks

NBU service on this box are running on user ID who is in administrators group on this box. When I did login to this box, created the silentinstall.resp file as in above logs and ran the same command it went on fine?

"C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\Temp\nbclient_8.1.2_windows_x64.sja.extracted\setup.exe" /CLIENT -s /REALLYLOCAL /RESPFILE:'silentinstall.resp'

So why this could not finish successfully when started by deployment policy?! interesting... In the event log on this system I did not find anything interesting, only this:

EVENTID 1042

Ending a Windows Installer transaction: C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\Temp\nbclient_8.1.2_windows_x64.sja.extracted\\Veritas NetBackup Client.msi. Client Process Id: 11092.

EVENTID 11708

Product: Veritas NetBackup Client -- Installation operation failed.

EVENTID 10001

Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Veritas NetBackup Client. Product Version: 8.1.2. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Veritas Technologies LLC. Installation success or error status: 0.

In that user ID %temp% folder I did find some MSIxxx.log with return value 3 inside... but no clue what is the culrpit...

I am attaching for those who can read it better to this thread...

Had the same issue so I would suggest to check :

MSI (c) (54:10) [11:43:47:611]: Machine policy value 'DisableMsi' is 1

Thank you for pointing this out...

Per google I found this:

1The Windows Installer is disabled for unmanaged applications but is still enabled for managed applications. Non-elevated per-user installations are blocked. Per-user elevated and per-machine installs are allowed.

Now I need to address this with my wintel team...

But from the other hand in the same log I saw this

MSI (c) (54:10) [11:43:47:611]: Product installation will be elevated because user is admin and product is being installed per-machine.
MSI (c) (54:10) [11:43:47:611]: Running product '{87548DD1-EA44-42E3-ABD6-52B67B50E172}' with elevated privileges: Product is assigned.

So it should have succeed, right?

Use the staged type of schedule deployment which will only push the package. If the installation can be done manually by running the silentinstall and it fails from the console the problem is related to your gpo (set disablemsi to 0 just for testing).

I have double check again your logs and your problem is here : DIFXAPP: ERROR 0x57 encountered while creating subkey for component '{24B4B1C2-B6AD-4690-8455-DB29A706DCE1}'

The problem arises when the DIFxAPP (Microsoft Driver Installation Framework for Applications) tries to create a Registry sub key in the user hive of the account that is running MSIEXEC. If there is no profile or user hive loaded for that user then the installation will fail.

As you can read in the bellow link this is a know problem:

https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.100014885

Having the same issue and just wanted to add that McAfee is not to blame for this despite Veritas Support insisting so.  I have just run deployment on 4 servers, all identicle in-terms of OS, firewall, McAfee etc 2 completed and 2 didn't.

Thanks for the info above, I will investigate further as I really want to get this sorted!

Do you finded the {24B4B1C2-B6AD-4690-8455-DB29A706DCE1} key on regedit?

As per the logs i can see this message

But in the starting it started with Running product '{87548DD1-EA44-42E3-ABD6-52B67B50E172}' with elevated privileges: Product is assigned.

Disallowing installation of component: {891B4BC3-475E-41DB-8BFE-C975AB5EE6B0} since the same component with higher versioned keyfile exists
