98 Error Code

H_Sharma

Hello Experts,

I am getting an error message frequently Error 98. Surprisingly It gets successful after some time in Next attempt.

There are many backups failing with 98 error code. But these get successful after 2 attempt automatically.

Is there any configuration where it is mentioned that netbackup retry backup after failure. Many machines are VM.

So pls let me know in VM case and Physical Server case?

Status 98 is a media request error.
This a media server error. Nothing to do with the client being backed up.
Media server with tape drives can only be physical.

To troubleshoot, create bptm log folder on the media server (TN) under netbackup\logs and add VERBOSE entry to vm.conf on the media server, followed by restart of NetBackup Device Manager service.

Next time status 98 is seen, check bptm log for errors as well as Windows Event Viewer System and Application logs.

If you want us to help look at logs, please copy bptm log to bptm.txt and also save above 2 Event Viewer logs as text files.
Upload the files here as File Attachment.

Is there any configuration where it is mentioned that netbackup retry backup after failure.

Yes. Host Properties -> Master -> Global Attributes.
The default is 2 tries every 12 hours.

Indicates a network and/or timeout issue, guess that 30 minutes is too long a time for the backups to wait for the next media.

By the way your number of data buffers seems very low, think you could solve some of the problem with buffer tuning

The standard questions: Have you checked: 1) What has changed. 2) The manual 3) If there are any tech notes or VOX posts regarding the issue

Seems like it was writing and then needed another media.

8/13/2014 10:09:23 AM - current media TN2complete, requesting next resource Any

After 30 minutes it didn't get the resource so timed out.

Do you have sufficient media/drives free?
