ACS Tapes "recycle"

 Hi All

We are planning to dismiss a 5.0 NetBackup server and re-use its tapes in another Netbackup server 6.5.3 ,
no matter of the backup images on those tapes , we arent' interested in preserve them .

Our idea is to force the expiration of that tapes , and so allow the remaining NetBackup server to access the tapes
via the INVENTORY_FILTER = ACS 0 BY_ACS_POOL 1 <old pool> in local vm.conf files .

We have on  ACS robot managing both pools right now, each of the two netbackup domains
see their tapes depending on the pool selected in the vm.conf file.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Hi.. If you have 2 separate NB environments and if you want to remove one master server with assigned tapes you can simply stop services on 5.0, uninstall etc.. and add old tapes to 6.5.3.
NB 6.5.3 will use tapes from 5.0 (you don't have to expire tapes in Nb 5.0)

 Hi Marek

My only doubt is if i need further operations after simply let the 6.5.3 environment see the new tapes adding
the ACS pool to the vm.conf file, in the line " INVENTORY_FILTER = ACS 0 BY_ACS_POOL 1 <old pool> " .

If the old tapes are not yet expired , may this bring us to have any problem with old backup images, and so on... ?

Thanks

and you are not importing the catalog from the old server to the new, then I'm pretty sure the new NBU server will just pick those tapes up as scratch tapes when you inventory them, and of course have the appropriate barcode rules set.

Yes, that's my opinion too, so we'll go on like this ... any further action will depend on results we get .

Hi Antonello,

If maybe useful to go into themaster server via the properties and click the media section, and select tar to be overwritten. I am pretty sure the files on the tape are in a tar format, and NBU may complain when it goes to reuse them in the other server.

Thanks

 Hi

Do you mean that this operation needs to be done on the dismissing Media server ?

A

On the master server admin gui:

Host Properties > Master Servers > Media > "Allow media overwrite"

Then select the "TAR" option enclosed within that box.

tape is just tape.. If you move tape with active backups to different environment nb will not check for exisiting data, just overwrite them.
