AIR replication setup in SLP

Sput
Level 3

Hello community,

I have a question that I hope can be answered easily. I have set up a test infrastructure as a proof of concept to replace BackupExec with Netbackup. I have a temporary licence for frontend TB capacity and have configured the jobs fine. I have since set up a second server in our DR site (separate netbackup domain) and configured the storage as advised in the Admin Guide I around page 819 or so. I have a successful source and target replication configuration but when I set up the SLP I have not got the 'Replication' opertaion option. Can anyone advise why this would be, is it a separately licenced option to use AIR?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Maybe you just clicked OK when looking at the Storage Server properties and it forced it back through the system

Once registered properly it would make the options available

Glad it is working now anyway!

AIR is only supported with deduplication.

You need NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-on license key to enable Dedupe and AIR.

In Front End TB licensing model this is included. Please check also this guide NetBackup_Dedupe_Guide.pdf

#EDIT# Marianne as usual is right ;) nevertheless the dedupe guide I added above will work for you.

Thanks both, I have already got deduplication working and working quite well I must say. Marianne, is this another feature that I would need to purchase above and beyond the frontend TB license?

It all depends if PureDisk can be seen in 'bpminlicense -verbose' output.

Dedupe included in front-end license is very new. So, it all depends on when license keys were issued.

My own Partner NFR keys have separate license keys.

Chris, can you confirm that you have MSDP configured in both domains?

Ok, the license was issued to me last week by our supplier and it is supposed to unlock all features for 60 days. I have configured MSDP as in the Admin guide. I cannot seem to run the bpminlicense command:

C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin>dir bpm*
 Volume in drive C has no label.
 Volume Serial Number is 7EC6-6C2B

 Directory of C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin

10/06/2013  22:16            57,968 bpmount.exe
               1 File(s)         57,968 bytes
               0 Dir(s)  1,707,280,420,864 bytes free

C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin>

Is there any other information that I can get for you?

Thanks for the help so far

Chris

Nothing wrong with your license keys.

OK - You have two master servers and MSDP configured in each domain, right?

Have you configured MSDP replication target in the GUI under Media and Device Management -> Credentials -> Storage Server ?

Hi Marianne,

Yes I have configured and refreshed and the primary is showing as the source server and the DR site is showing as the destination.

I am quite literally following the "Admin Guide volume I" and am on page 819 where I am in the process of setting up the SLP.

sorry, the DR site is showing as the 'target'

Ok - just want to double check you have done a few things ....

1. Have you obtained the de-dupe password from the appliances? (Appliance - ShowDedupPassword)

2. Have you opened up the storage server properties and on the last tab (Replication) added the remote appliance to it  - its short name, username root and de-dupe pasword?

Once that is done you should be able to add a replication step to the SLP

If you have done all of this and still cannot do it then create a new policy - point it at the de-dupe disk pool and see if the Accelerator check box is available.

If it is not then most likely the key you have just doesnt work and you will need a new one - they show all the features but sometime do not enable them - I have had this twoce with different customers.

Hope this helps

Hi Mark,

I do not have an appliance, just a standard windows ent 2008R2 box with the master installed and the same at DR. I set it up myself with a user: testnbu and pass: testnbu for both servers. I have added the remote server on the replication tab.

The accelerator option is available in my policies although I will probably not use it. I have used the same license for both servers but don't think this should cause an issue?

I will check with the vendor if I can get a new key but as deduplication is working I would have thought that the functionality would be there...

I have dug out the user and password and it is correct as below so I don't think that authentication is the issue...

C:\Program Files\Veritas\Volmgr\bin>tpconfig -dsh -stype PureDisk
==============================================================================
Media Server:                   pi-lon-testnbu.xxxxxxxx.local
Storage Server:                 pi-lon-testnbu.xxxxxxxx.local <PureDisk>
User Id:                        testnbu <PureDisk>
==============================================================================

C:\Program Files\Veritas\Volmgr\bin>

*************************************

C:\Program Files\Veritas\Volmgr\bin>tpconfig -dsh -stype PureDisk
==============================================================================
Media Server:                   pi-lon-testnbu.xxxxxxxx.local
Storage Server:                 pi-lon-testnbu.xxxxxxxx.local <PureDisk>
User Id:                        testnbu <PureDisk>
==============================================================================

C:\Program Files\Veritas\Volmgr\bin>tpconfig -update -storage_server pi-lon-test
nbu.petroineos.local -stype PureDisk -sts_user_id testnbu
Enter the OpenStorage host's password for User Id testnbu:

Please re-enter the OpenStorage host's password to confirm it:

C:\Program Files\Veritas\Volmgr\bin>

Can you show us a few scrrenshots of what you have setup (and what you do not have the option of)

So storage server properties and SLP properties / tabs / dropdowns etc.

Sput

This is unbelievable. I have taken all of these screenshots for my vendor but I have gone in to do it for you and the option is now there! I am really not sure what changed but it may have been the tpconfig command that gave it a kick???

Thanks to you both for helping!

Maybe, I will mark that as a solution just for closure...
