About offsite backup to tape using two media servers

I am new to Netbackup.

I have two sites and two OST devices in these two sites.

Only Site B has a tape library.

I want to backup VM to OST in Site A and duplicate the backup site to OST inSite B. I think its possible even I can do it in Backup Exec.

But if i want to use Media server in Site B which is connecting to a tape library and then duplicate the backup site in Site B OST using Media server in Site B, Can netbackup do it automatcally in Same backup job?

BE can't do schedule it and I have to manually duplicate. Its impractical.

You can do that using SLP (Storage Lifecycle Policy).
Create SLP with backup to OST1, duplicate to OST2, duplicate to tape:
Backup to OST1
Duplicate to OST2
Duplicate to tape

You will then select the SLP as backup storage.

Thanks for reply.

That mean Media server in Site A performs first two tasks and media server in Site B performs the last task in a job automatically?

Backup to OST1
Duplicate to OST2
Duplicate to tape

Duplicate to OST2 is done by both media servers: media1 reads from OST1 and media2 writes to OST2.

Please note the indents - each subsequent operation will use the previous one as source.

Forgot to mention that I am using HP Storeonce appliance.

Site A: CASO and MMS1

Site B: MMS2 with Tape library.

In same backup job, we can set "Backup to OST-A" and "Duplicate to OST-A" using MMS1 and set "Duplicate to tape" using MMS2? Because MMS wont have any connection to tape library.

@kf2013

I assume you mean Site A  has NBU Master server (not BE CASO) and Media server MMS1, right?

You may want to go through the SLP config steps in NBU Admin Guide I (Links to manuals in Handy NBU Links in my signature)

Summarizing steps under Creating a storage lifecycle policy topic (please see manual for details and screenshots):

  1. Open Storage Lifecycle Policies
  2. Create new Storage Lifecycle Policy
  3. Enter name
  4. Add Operations:
First Operation: click Add. Select Backup operation and OST-A as Storage Unit, and retention
Second Operation : Select the Backup Operation, click Add to 1st Duplication. Select STU for OST-B and retention. (Backup must be the Source)
Third Operation: Select Duplication, and add another Duplication. Select tape STU and retention (1st duplication must be the Source)

One more thing:

If you want SiteB to be the DR for SiteA, best if you config the servers at the 2 sites as independent master/media servers and configure AIR (Auto Image Replication).

Please read in Admin Guide I : About NetBackup Auto Image Replication
You will find the explanation and configuration steps.
For detailed steps with StoreOnce, you need to request documentation from HP.

With AIR, your SLPs  will look like this:

MasterA SLP:
Backup to OST-A
    Replication to OST-B on MasterB

MasterB SLP:
Import
Duplication to tape STU on MasterB.

Just some additional advice (from experience):

Please take your time and read the documentation (NBU and HP) before you start configuring anything.
Preparation is the key to success.

Sorry, I am new to Netabckup and I am using Backup Exec. I dont know whether netbackup can do it.

Assumed Enviroument:

Site A:

One Master Server

One Media server with HP Storeonce OST

Site B:

One One Media server with HP Storeonce OST and Tape library.

I want to use Site A Media server to backup VM to Site A HP Storeonce OST, and then duplicate to Site B HP Storeonce OST. (I am using it in Backup exec now)

I want to use Site B media server to duplicate backup set to tape library (I need to manually to do it in backup exec now).

Is it possible to do it automatiicaly in netbackup

'?

Yes. NetBackup can do it automatically.

I tried to explain a week ago.

Have you tried in the meantime to read up about about Storage Lifecycle Policy?
I have pointed you to the relevant chapter in NetBackup Admin Guide I.

You can find links to manuals for your NBU Version in 'Handy NBU Links' in my signature.

PS:
In Netbackup, the equivalent of BE Media Server is called a Master server.
A master server can have many media servers, but can also be a media server.
