Adding cleaning tapes

nasahasha

Drives cleaning comment says "NEEDS CLEANING", as I didnt find any cleaning tapes, 2 cleaning tapes were inserted. I ran an inventory from netbackup

"2 new medis are added with below media id" in inventory details and 2 tapes showed up as scratch. Will netbackup use them for writings, how do I add them as cleaning catridges?

Media ID: 000096, 000097

Barcode: 000096L4, 000097L4 (I read that barcode should start with CLN for cleaning tapes, How do i change it now?)

Netbackup version: 7.6.0.2

OS:Linux

Delete the tapes from NBU, remove from library and change the barcodes.

Set the tape density to match the drive density, BUT, with cln, so hcartclean if the drives are hcart, or hcart2_clean if the drives are hcart2, for example

Cleaning media must also be in the NONE volume pool.

It would be recommended to set up a barcode rule to do this, once you have changed the barcode to CLNxxx

In the shortterm, just insert the cleaning tape into the drive manuly, or using robtest.

They should really have a barcode on them that identifies them as cleaning tapes e.g. CLNxxx, you can then create a barcode rule such that an inventory will recognise them as cleaning tapes within NetBackup.

NetBackup *will* try & use those tapes for writing (& fail miserably!!) - you need to eject & delete them now before it does.

Then you could:

1) temporarily create a barcode rule that identifies the media from their current labels as cleaning tapes (ensure that the correct media type is selected for the type of tape/drive in question e.g. CLN_HCART3 or whatever the 'type' is) - personally I would only try this as a last resort & make sure the rule is deleted immediately after to prevent any confusion at a later date.

2) Bypass NetBackup & use robtest to move the cleaning tape into the drive directly for cleaning.

3) Preferably, get some proper labels & try again with a more permanent barcode rule.

Ready made printed CLN barcode will be more helpful but not absolutely necessary. we can configure Cleaning media with normal / regular  bardode also... in your case  ---  000096, 000097

My cleaning tapes dont have barcodes with CLN but below solution did worked.

Hi Yogesh,

I found your post with below steps, I follwed them, It worked.

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/adding-cleaning-tape-netbackup-7

First make sure 000400L3 is cleaning media. *** should be 100% sure then only follow below..

1 delete 000400L3 media from media database

2 inventry robot & note down slot number for 000400L3 media

3 again delete from Media database

4 create manually new media by right click --new

5 configure as cleaning media and select volume group form drop down option

6 manually mentioned slot number as u noted in step 2

7 mention clean mounts & click finish

8 enjoy :)

And also i tried advanced option in inventory and gave barcode tag as 000097 (media id), media type as 1/2" cleaning tape, ran inventory.

It considered 000097 as cleaning media.
