Hi,
Is there any other way of backing up vmware other than traditional snapshot backup through backup host?
Also suggest whether we can use Windows media server as backup host with Solaris Master Server.

Sorry, I don't understand what 'disk consolidations' mean.
See if this excellent article helps: (Netbackup) VMWare Backup over SAN
Before you zone the SAN volumes to the Windows backup host, run:
diskpart
automount disable
automount scrub
About backup over SAN:
You will understand that the backup host needs to have direct/SAN access to the volumes in order to perform SAN backup, right?
Local/direct attached volumes on ESX server can only be backed up across the network.

Yes. You can install NBU in each VM and back them up as normal clients.
Advantages of VDAP (VMware vStorage APIs for Data Protection) backups far outweighs client backups of VM hosts - it backs up vmdk's and give you the ability to restore individual files.
Windows media server can be used as backup host with Solaris master.
In fact, any supported backup host can be used, including SUSE or RHEL Linux servers.
See Statement of Support for NetBackup 7.x in a Virtual Environment: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH127089
PS:
Please always mention your NBU version as support for VMware is different in each NBU version.

Hi Marianne,
Thanks for your Reply.
Our NBU version is 7.5.0.6.
If we configure snapshot backup for VMs, this might lead to disk consolidations in VMs and result in backup failure or even create instability in VM infra. Any ideas how to overcome this?
In our infra, we have both Local and LUN data store. We can take the vmdk in LUN datastore through SAN by zoning it to the Netbacku Backup host( Media Server). But for the local datastore, is there a way to configure through SAN?
Can we make the VM as Media server and Zone the tape drive to VM?

Hi Marianne,
Thanks for your inputs. The Links you shared were very helpful in understanding the VMware backups from scratch.
