Does anyone know if it is possible to backup a VMware host that doesn't have VMware tools installed or a host cleint.

vmtools is a requirement for snapshots to work. Without vmtools, VMware backup will fail with snaphot error - 156.
The alternative is to install NBU client in the VM.
