Hello All,

I have a windows server with around 18TB data. It is not a Database.

WHich would be the best way to back  it up.Weekly backup will be fine

The master server is NBU 7.6.0.2 and NBU appliance is also there which is 5230.

Any suggesstions are much appreciated.

18TB spread scross how many drive letters?

Is the data DFSR based?  Is the data mostly images, video, audo or user document files?  Is the data database dumps/exports?  Is the data compressed?  Lots of zip files?  Lots of PDF files?  Or perhaps backups/images of servers/desktops/laptops?  Is the data mostly application binaries?

Do any of the volumes already use Windows native NTFS folder/file compression?  Are any of the volumes NTFS de-dupe volumes, or ReFS volumes?

Is A/V enabled for all file reads?

Are reparse or mount points used?

Is the data on SAN storage, or local/DAS, or even NAS (CIFS/SMB)?

There are a lot of other things to consider... such as NICs, server locality, server performance resources (CPU/RAM), and OS version and 'bitness' (x86 or x64) ?

Hi,

Please clearify:

You have windows 18TB server.

Is it NBU media or client server?

What is network connectivity between Master server,NBU appliance 5230 & this Host?

What is disk size of 5230?

The Windows server is a client.It is a 64-bit WIn 2008 R2 server.

As of now , I have decided to go with  direct to tape backups.

There are some more constraints as of retention of bakcup etc. This seems to be the best way as of now.

Hi SRK,

You are not answered on sdo reply. (That's required for backup policy configuration)

You are decided to take backup on tapes, but you have standalone drive or tape library.

If Standalone drive, than you will make sure to mark tape sequence for restoration purpose.

You will also take backup on compress mode, if required.
