Backup Exchange, SQL, Active Directory with VMWARE

What is the best practice to backup an Exchange server or a SQL or even Domain controller (AD).

Actualy I'm backup them with VMWARE (Flashbackup-Windows) policies.

Someone told me that the Flashbackup-Windows isnt supported by Microsoft for Exchange, SQL etc. and that we should install the NB Agent instead to backup the VMDK (Snaphot) block level.

I'm using Netbackup 7.5.0.5

Thanks

As you are on NBU 7.5 you need to change your policy type to be VMware rather than flashbackup

You then get different tabs in the policy where you can select to do GRT backup of Exchange, SQL or SharePoint

AD is not covered as a GRT component so you would need to do a GRT backup to disk using a regular policy and backup at least the Shadow Copy Components of each AD controller to get GRT protection for those

For Exchange, SQL and SharePoint you need to setup the NetBackup client as normal and also install the Symantec VSS Provider (You will find that in the goodies directory after you have installed the client)

The rule is that each server must be a standa lone server - so not clustered SQL, no a spread out Exchange system or SharePoint Farm - just all-in-one servers

Alternatively you do them as regular agent backups using clients (but not through the VMware vSpehe API)

Hope this helps

#edit# If you look in the latest SQL, Exchange or SharePoint NBU Admin Guides it has a section in each about backing them up in a VMware Policy
