Hi All,

we are using NetBackup to backup our Sun Solaris Servers.

How to make sure that the backup is valid ?

Best Regards,

area of the GUI, but there's no better proof of the validity of a backup than actually doing a restore.

Most of us simply trust status 0 and perform regular test restores.

Backup verification (either via GUI or bpverify) takes a long time. The data on tape is verifed against the NBU catalogs. No check is performed against client's filesystem.

How do you perform regular test restores ?  on the Live node itself ?

Our customer don't trust the status 0 and wants to perform regular data validity through restore or if any other way .

Restore on a Live node is critical , therefore better to bring a test bed system and perform the restore on it . I don't see any other solution , right ?

you can do a full restore is to do the full restore. Nobody would want to test this by over-writing "live" data, but the actual fact that you would be restoring to a "test" platform has, by its nature, introduced differences, however slight, that wouldn't be there if you were restoring "live".

Proof of the ability to restore from media would be just to select a few individual files or folders & restore to an alternate location.

We haven't the resources to do a full "test" restore ourselves, we trust the 0 status codes & our ability to restore is proved by the actual restores that we do do.

Hi All,

Our Customer would like to validate the backup tapes which will be produced from the Centralized backup Solution (CBS).
Our Customer is requesting a solution to do a periodic test/data validity on all nodes for the CBS backup tapes .
Currently the existing solution is to check the Status code “0” that Netbackup is returning after the completion of the backup job.
This solution is not enough to secure and validate the restore because the tapes can be damaged after the backup, or it might have data integrity errors due to errors that might be caused by Netbackup while doing its job or human errors that might be caused by altering the data that is residing on the tapes.

We are looking for a solution that enables our customer to check the validity for the backup data.

Our customer is not happy with restoring couple of files and he needs like a full restore testing .

Is there any Complete Solution offered from Symantec that could do that ?

As you says.....

Our customer don't trust the status 0 and wants to perform regular data validity through restore

You also says.....

Our customer is not happy with restoring couple of files and he needs like a full restore testing

In above situation i dont think so there is any data protection product to make them happy frown

sorry to say but how we can make them happy......

whereby you test restore of a select set of servers one week, another set another week etc - if you have the resources to do so.

One thing to bear in mind "...the tapes can be damaged after the backup..." - they could also be damaged during or after the test restore!

There is no 'complete' solution out of the box as far as I'm aware.

Hi ,

Indeed , they don't trust the 0 status , they don't want to restore single files, they are asking for a solution to perform complete restore of a backup .
