Backup data is not spanning over CIFS volumes configured in AdvancedDisk Storage Pool

Hi,

I want to test the data spanning over disk/NAS volumes configured in disk pools. Hence, I have configured AdvancedDisk pool with two volumes of each 10GB(\\rre24721\fs1 and \\rre24721\fs2) which is UNC path CIFS shares. Then created Storage unit for this pool called unit1. Created policy with source(12GB data to be backed up) and the policy storage is unit1.

Started backup and Netbackup started writing on \\rre24721\fs2 volume. Backup data is not spanning over another volume  \\rre24721\fs1 once 10GB of  \\rre24721\fs2 volume is filled.

Error:-

Are both the credentials of these CIFS shares the same?

Yes! I set log on account(AD user) for these two services and restarted the services in Netbackup server/media server,

NetBackup Client Service

NetBackup Remote Manager and Monitor Service

No issues with the authentication and the log on account has both read/write permission in HP StoreAll NAS device.

As i recall disk spanning is not reccomended for use with disk pools due to the issues it causes

However, if you do want to use it you need to allow it on the Master / Media Servers host properties - Media Tab - Allow backups to span disk (needs a re-start of services to properly register)

Hope this helps

I guess the same recommendation about NFS applies to CIFS as well - see this note in  NetBackup AdvancedDisk Storage Solutions Guide  :

Note: Symantec recommends that you do not span backup images across NFS
volumes in an AdvancedDisk disk pool. File system full conditions cannot be
detected adequately. Therefore, a disk pool based on NFS volumes should be
comprised of only one volume.

@ Mark Solutions: I made sure to select Allow backups to span disk option and get registered. Even then I was facing problem.

@Mari anne: I was refering this same document which I got it from internet  NetBackup AdvancedDisk Storage Solutions Guide. I was trying with CIFS volumes Since it is said that NFS not supported.

So, Shall I take this option (Spanning over CIFS volumes) also not supported?

Would you like to suggest some other ways to span the backup data over CIFS volumes? like creating two individual unit storages with different CIFS volumes and making a unit storage group. Then adding this unit storage group as policy storage. Will this way work? I have not tried this option yet.

Thanks for your comments!
