Backup of Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster fails

Henrik_dk

Hi,

Recently the support for backup of Windows Server 2012 R2 using NBU 7.5.0.6 was announced.

I do have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster. I have installed the special package of 7.5.0.6 for Windows Server 2012.

But when I try to add a client by browsing the virtuel guests running on the cluster I simply can't see any...

I can add a client by typing the display name. But when I run the backup it fails immidiately with error code 48 ("client hostname could not be found(48)").

I'm running NBU 7.5.0.6 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V clusters without any problems.

What is the problem?

Thank you for your help!

Best regards

Henrik

"Browse for VM" operations with Hyper-V are failing with status code 48 (client hostname could not be found)

Article:TECH204722  |  Created: 2013-04-04  |  Updated: 2013-04-05  |  Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH204722

The problem may be one of the following:

  • The NetBackup master server cannot communicate with the virtual machine.

  • The host name of the virtual machine is not available.

The NetBackup job details log contains the following message:

    Error bpbrm(pid=8072) Nameuse [0], VM [<vm name>]
not found on any node. Is either powered off or does
    not exist.

The virtual machine is either not running, or it is booting up. Make sure that the virtual machine is running and then rerun the backup.

Hi,

Thank you for your comments, inn_kam.

I have done some further research: I have installed a Windows Server 2012 R2 stand-alone Hyper-V host. I've also installed NBU 7.5.0.6 and created a virtual guest.

But when I try to save the Hyper-V backup policy I get this error message:

Error validating Hyper-V machine name. Server failed to list VM's (-1)

No guest virtual machines are displayed when I try to browse.

So the problem doesn't seem to have anything to do with the cluster feature, but has something to do with NBU 7.5.0.6 and Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V when you want to take a Hyper-V backup frown

Best regards

Henrik

Hi

I've got the same prob with hyperV cluster in 2012R2

I think there's no support yet in 7.5.0.6, look on page 33 of this doc  http://kbdownload.symantec.com/resources/sites/BUSINESS/content/live/TECHNICAL_SOLUTION/127000/TECH1...

maybe in 7.6 ....

The same error in 7.5.0.6.
Has anyone tried it in 7.5.0.7?

W2012 Hyper-V is very much supported as from NBU 7.5.0.6.

Even the (previous) Oct 2013 version of 'Statement of Support for NetBackup 7.x in a Virtual Environment' says the following on p. 33:

Support for Hyper-V on Windows 2012
NetBackup 7.5.0.6 adds support for Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012. NetBackup
7.5.0.6 and later releases support Windows 8 as a guest OS.
Note the following limitations on NetBackup support for Windows 2012 Hyper-V:
■ Block-level incremental backup is not supported.
■ File-level recovery from a Hyper-V backup is not supported in any of the following
cases:
■ The files inside a VM reside in a Resilient File System (ReFS) volume.
■ The files inside a VM reside in an NTFS deduplicated volume.
■ The VM is composed of VHDX file(s).
File-level recovery continues to be supported when the files inside the VM reside
in an NTFS volume and the VM is composed of VHD files(s).
■ Backup of virtual machines within Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) is supported.
In Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, CSV has a limitation that requires serialized backups.
In Hyper-V Server 2012, CSV supports concurrent backups without that limitation.
Consequently, the CSV timeout setting in the NetBackup Hyper-V policy is only
used in Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 deployments

Thanks for the new link but there's also no support for Windows 2012 R2 hyper-V Cluster

Only for Windows 2012 server ...

HyperV support  :

Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012.

Support for Windows Server 2012 begins at NetBackup 7.5.0.6.

See “Support for Hyper-V on Windows 2012” on page 33.

And on page 33,  there's nothing on Windows server 2012 R2

I am getting slightly bored of threads about Windows 2012 R2 being answed as though they are about Windows 2012 (usually from people who should know/read posts better), we are running 7.6.0.1 and are still seeing the same issue on a Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster.

I have got a news from my Symantec Account manager

"The HyperV 2012 R2 will be supported in Netbackup 7.6.0.2 whose output

is scheduled end of March, this date can be change"
