Backup of really huge database using Netbackup 7

Hi

I would like to have your valuable views and suggestions regarding Oracle backups.

Oracle version : Oracle 11g R2 configured in 2 node RAC on RHEL 6

Number of DB instances : 2

DB size : Instance 1: 7 TB

              Instance 2: 12 TB

I would like to know what will be the best way to backup these databases using Netbackup like RMAN or RMAN with Snapshot client or any other method like storage based snapshot using Snapshot client option and having it moved to tape.

Thanks

Giri B

If you use tapes then you have couple of options to speed up the backup. If you have storage that supports hardware snapshots, use them (Enterprise Client license required for all nodes) in conjunction of off-host processing (use media server as data mover, must be on the same OS) or SAN client (FT media server required) or SAN Media Server (Shared Storage Option for tape is required).

In order to use hardware snapshots, you need to have the PROXY command in your RMAN script, this part is documented in the NBU for Oracle Admin Guide.

'Best' depends on your criteria...theres no shortage of ways to do it, however what constraints are there, business, technical , operational?

Time and timing...system loading...disk2disk..must be to tape...all that.

Hi

The constraints/requirements are

1.Backup window of 8 hours

2. Backup destination is a DD 670

3. 10 Gb ethernet connectionacts as backbone

4. DB is configured in a RAC and should be 99.97 available as the DB is very critical for our opeations and backups shouldnot affect performance

I don't think SAN media server or SAN client can complete the backup of 12 TB in 8 hours. You may go with BCV type backups.

Please see  :  Oracle RAC with NetBackup best practices : http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO44894

There are different options and links depending if backup is Load Balanced or not...

First let see if we can do it in a utopic world:

1. Client with a 10Gig card, should be able to move up to 1200MB/sec (Utopia)

2. DataDomain box with 2x10Gig Cart, should be able to move up to 2400MB/sec (Utopia)

3. If the DD is doing nothing and just dedicated for this client the math says:

     12TB~12582912MB

So our limit is 1200MB/sec which is the Client 10Gig card speed limit, is a 10hour window so our limit is:

     10hr*60min*60sec=36000secs

     1200MB/sec*36,000secs=43200000MB~41TB

So by math if the DD box is dedicated or at least one of the 10Gig ports is fully dedicated for this backup it can be done without a problem, but if go in to reality lets say we can perform only at 50%, still is 20TB in 10 hours, so you should be fine with your jobs running at Quater of the speed, meanin other jobs can run at the same time and you should be able to achive your backup window, of course all the tuning needs to be done, talking about buffers, nic, tcp/ip tuning and key piece Oracle DB response if they DB cannot follow the pace of the backup speed it will be your first bottleneck.

Hope this helps.

Regards.
