Just as I can have NetBackup manage a tape drive / robot connected to an NDMP client, is it possible to connect a tape drive / robot directly to a Windows client and have NetBackup discover and manage that tape drive / robot?
At the moment we're getting 43MB/s with this layout:
windows client -> 10gbps ethernet -> unix master server -> 4gbps fiber LTO5 library
In contrast, our NDMP jobs, which the tape drive / robot are directly connected to our NDMP devices, run anywhere from 70-110MB/s. We'd love to see rates like those.
Thanks!

First thing I would do is to find out where the bottleneck is, is it the network or read I/O on the client?
Using this technote will guide you to the cause of slowness: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH18422
If there is a need to make your Netbackup client discover and manage tape drive/robot, you will need to reinstall it with Netbackup server software and make it a SAN media server.
