Backup trying to use Vaulted media

I've come across an error I haven't seen before. Jobs are failing a a status 96 (no media availble) even though there are plenty of tapes in the library. When I have looked at the job log of the failing backups they are trying to write to media that was vaulted overnight. I've re-run the jobs manually but they continue trying to write to the media that has been vaulted and taken off-site.

Anyone seen this before??

How was the media vaulted?

If media was ejected using a Vault profile, the media would've been suspended and ejected.

This media status (Robot = None; Status = Suspended) will most definitely exclude media from being chosen for backups.

The only possibility here is that NBU point of view was not up to date with Robot contents. Do Robot Inventory to ensure that media status is up to date.

You say that the media was vaulted overnight. When are your backups running? Also overnight? Best to schedule vault policies to run after the backup window has closed.

The media is vaulted using a vault profile and as can be seen below the media is no longer in the library yet the jobs still seem to try and use it for backup:

Check this time 07/03/2011 08:17:15
the tape should be in a suspended state and unavailable for writing after this time.

When was netbackup trying to use it to write?

Follow standard troubleshooting proceedures for this status code.

1. check for frozen tapes

2. check for correct volume group

3. etc....

Its ok all resolved now. Media server was in 'Active-Disk', tried to bring it back in using:

vmoprcmd -activate_host -h <server name>

and got the following error:

oprd returned abnormal status (96)
IPC Error: Daemon may not be running

Found the following which has resolved my issue:

Extract from TN that you've quoted:

"nbrbutil -dump output shows media server resources still allocated for the media server."

It seems as if backups and Vault were competing for resources.

PLEASE check vault profile schedule - ensure that vault policy kick off after backup window has closed.

I've moved the vault job so it should no longer cause a problem. thanks for all the responses to my problem

So moving the vault job as suggested is the resolution?

To get the jobs working again I had to follow the steps in:

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/324925.htm

and move the vault job as well
