Barcode Media ID mismatch

stwali005

I have been using a media ID generation rule successfully for about a year now. I have just seen a bizarre issue where i was trying to eject a tape from the tape library GUI and couldnt find it - thats because the barcode and the media ID are wrong.

The Tape has already been written to, and i am worried now what will happen when the tape with the barcode that the media ID is actually - gets loaded, will there be confusion and what i can do to resolve.

So Barcode 014775L7 was scanned - but given a media id of 014742

Now what happens when tape with barcode 014742L7 gets scanned and imported? Is there a way to change the Media ID if its already assigned? I also cannot erase the tape as its currently an infinite retention. Unless i duplicate the contents of the tape to another one and scratch it?

Any suggestions welcome. Many thanks

From the screenshot NBU has the mediaID 014742 associated to the barcode 014775L7  - so it's 'wrong' but not to NBU if that makes sense.  Or in other words, when it loads tape with barcode 014775L7   it expects to find the media ID 014742.

The only option you have, is to either leave it alone, or duplicate the tape then delete the original.

Thank you mph999.

So i have a blank tape with a barcode 014742L7, but that Media ID is already taken, wont that cause confusion? Should i set that asside and get another barcode put onto it and scrap that barcode for good?

Many thanks

Yes, it will cause confusion.

Please show us output of this command in order to give you best possible advise:

nbemmcmd -listmedia -mediaid 014742

Thanks Marianne:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>nbemmcmd -listmedia -mediaid 014742

Ouch.... Valid images with  INFINITY retention.

You will need to follow @mph999's advice - duplicate all images on this tape to another tape, then expire and delete 014742.

If you run Inventory after deleting 014742, barcode 014775L7 should then be added as media-id 014775.
You will now need to re-label the tape to overwrite the internal label.

I am trying to figure out how this could've happened as this not normal behaviour.
Perhaps incorrect device mappings at some stage?
Or some manually changed barcode label and updated NBU using vmchange?

Hi Marriane, yes - infinite retention is ouch :)

I have certainly never seen this before and i know i have not done any vmchange commands (not to say someone else with access might have - but doubt it)

I shall run a duplication to another tape and expire the tape.

It's possible to change the barcode associate with a tape:

EG

Barcode AA1234L6. Media ID.  AA1234

You could use vmchange to change the barcode to AA4321L6

So you now have AA4321L6 / MediaID AA1234 ...

And this will work fine ... - well until you run an inventory when it will try and add a new tape with barcode AA1234L6.  It won't re-label though as it would flag a mismatch when it reads the tape header.

Anyway, vmchange the barcode, and then stick a new barcode on the tape, equal to the barcode that you changed it to.
