Can XML files be compressed safely?

We have 114748 .xml files under /usr/openv/netbackup/db/snapshot/vm that

haven’t been touched in over 90 days.  Can they be gzipped to

gain some space?

Thank you for the reply.  Reading that bit, it seems that the files *could* be gzipped and expanded if a restore was necessary.  Is this a valid assumption?
