I would like to know if a Media Server can be promoted to be a Master Server, provided the case that the master server is down.

Please advise and/or provide documentation in reference.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

I belive that is not possible, but if you want go ahead you could re-install media server as Master server and start the recovery catalog ==> See this TN - NetBackup 8.0 Troubleshooting Guide - https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.000116408

Of Course that there are  others steps to perform, therefore take a look this suggestion below..

But, I really would like suggest you to contact Veritas Consulting and Consulting Partners as recommended by this TN: https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.TECH31385

VERITAS has developed comprehensive methodologies to handle a variety of reconfiguration requirements including the following scenarios:

  • Migration from an existing master server to a NetBackup appliance master server
Merging of two or more domains
Splitting of a domain into two or more domains
Clustering of a non-clustered Master Server
Renaming of a Master Server or Media Server
Moving a Master Server to a new machine involving a host name change
Moving a Master Server to a different platform/operating system (Windows to Linux/Unix or Linux/Unix to Windows)
    Un-clustering a clustered Master Server

A number of VERITAS consultants and Consulting Partners worldwide have been trained on these procedures and certified to deliver them in accordance with standards required by the VERITAS technical support organization

I cant see how that would be possible.  They perform different functions.  Unless you want to rename the media server to the name of the master server, clear and reinstall all the software and then perform catalog recovery, etc..

Hello,

You can not promote media server as Master server. You have to decommission the media server and reconfigure the server as Master server from scratch. Old master server and new master server must be identical. You can use different IP or OS version only.
