Hi,

SWe have NBU 7.0 on Windows 2008 R2

A Hp tape Library.

Unable to take backup on tape with the error code 98.

I have tried to reinstalll the robot library..same problem..

Below is the error 9While doing label).

8/12/2014 3:47:36 PM - begin Label
8/12/2014 3:47:36 PM - started process bplabel (7548)
8/12/2014 3:47:36 PM - requesting resource test:A00095
8/12/2014 3:47:37 PM - Error nbjm(pid=5728) NBU status: 830, EMM status: No drives are available
8/12/2014 3:47:39 PM - end Label; elapsed time: 00:00:03

You will have to do physical inventory on all slots.

The previous 'normal' Inventory assigned all new media-id's for all tapes in the robot because there are no barcodes on the tapes.
NBU has no idea that these tapes have previously been used and that there are different internal labels written in tape header.
The ONLY way to fix it is with physical inventory (vmphyinv)

You can see that the previous inventory has added media id A00098 for the tape in slot 21, but the media id that was previously assigned and written to the tape header is A00090.

Please delete all media-id's that do not really exist (like A00098).

Tape backups will work again after vmphyinv.

Error nbjm(pid=5728) NBU status: 830, EMM status: No drives are available

what is the output of below commands from media server

tpconfig -d

tpautoconf -t

vmoprcmd -d

What is the history of the install? Is this a new problem and its been working for months or its all new and never worked? If you have drives, are they up? If you dont, can the OS see them? Are the drives defined as the correct type for the media?

All of the ones Nagalla said, but include the output of the INSTALL_PATH\Veritas\Volmgr\bin\scan command too.

Check density of the tapes and tape drive. If not the same density, Netbackup presume tape and tape drives are incompatible. E.g. blue tapes must match blue tape drives.

I'm with Nicolai.

What is the density of the media?  And the density of the tape drives where you want to label the tapes?

In NBU the densities MUST match.
hcart media can only be used in hcart drives.
hcart2 media can only be used in hcart2 drives, etc.
It does no matter if the hardware is compatible.

Show us output of these 2 commands:
vmquery -m A00095
tpconfig -l
(commands are in ..\volmgr\bin)

If separate master and media server, run vmquery on the master and tpconfig on the media server.

Hi,

Please, explain..

We have HP MSL 2024 tape Library. With Ultrium LTO4 with 1.6 TB (Raw).

Density is -13,250 bits/mm.

Thanks.

This media is defined as a DLT cartridge as seen below.

media ID:              A00105
media type:            DLT cartridge tape (11)
barcode:               --------
media description:     Added by Media Manager
volume pool:           test (11)
robot type:            TLD - Tape Library DLT (8)
robot number:          0
robot slot:            21

Your tape drives are LTO (HCART) drives (as seen below), so it cannot be used with those drives.

C:\Program Files\Veritas\Volmgr\bin>tpconfig -l
Device Robot Drive       Robot                    Drive                 Device

Type     Num Index  Type DrNum Status  Comment    Name                  Path

robot      0    -    TLD    -       -  -          -                     {3,0,4,1  }
  drive    -    0  hcart    1      UP  -          HP.ULTRIUM4-SCSI.000  {3,0,4,0 }
  drive    -    1  hcart    2      UP  -          HP.ULTRIUM4-SCSI.001  {4,0,5,0 }

Hi,

But we are using LTO4 tapes...in the magazin..in the tape library...

Is there any thing I need to change...or some thing in the tape or drive.from NBU..

Thanks.

Biggest problem of all is that you are using non-barcoded media:

media ID:              A00105
media type:            DLT cartridge tape (11)
barcode:               --------                  <<---

So, neither the robot barcode reader nor NetBackup knows what the actual media type is.

Why are you using non-barcoded media in a robot with a barcode reader?

Media management with non-barcoded media is a nightmare. Each time you do an inventory, NBU will assume that all the media in the robot is new and assign a default media id and default density.

Please forget about backups until you have purchased barcode labels and stuck them on the tapes.
These labels will have L4 at the end of the barcode, telling the robot they are LTO4 labels and telling NBU that they are hcart densitity.

Delete all media that starts with A0..... and then perform inventory.

(We can help you in the meantime with a workaround, but you (or your customer) is going to battle with media management for a long-long time.

The robot in question is barcode capable so all the above comments are the best solution. Labels are about 50pence each and will save you a fortune. Once you get your labelliing right on your LTO4 tapes and NB recognises them as LTO4  and not DLT then life will be good.Jim.

Hi,

Yes ...I have check the tape and it does not have any bar code..

Let me see to arrange the same..

Thanks.

Hi,

Is there any way to change the DLT tape as LTO in NBU manually...

This will help us to continus the backup.

Just to add..the backup were running in last mounth..as we haven't  changed the tape. We are using the same tape...

Thanks.

.... we haven't  changed the tape. We are using the same tape...

As per my previous post :
Each time you do an inventory, NBU will assume that all the media in the robot is new and assign a default media id and default density.

With non-barcoded media, you should never do an Inventory when same media is used.
You need to delete all of these DLT media, then use vmphyinv command to perform a 'physical' inventory.
Each tape in the robot will be loaded on-by-one in the tape drive, the internal barcode checked, followed by update of NBU config with media-id and slot number.

See this TN for vmphyinv command usage: http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO72754

Also read up in NBU Admin Guide I about using non-barcoded media in a robot....

Move tapes to standalone residence (logical operation), make sure you got a bar code rule (see link #2 - important). Perform a robot inventory.

This technote below is about cleaning tapes - but you see how the process is done.

Barcode rules have no effect when non-barcoded media is used....
