Can we amend the NBU Oracle RMAN script to backup to local NFS drive>

Dylan_Goh

Environment:

1 NBU server, 1 Oracle server with RMAN, 1 Dedup NAS appliance.

By default, when we configure the Oracle backup, the backup data will travel from Oracle server to NBU master, then to it attached tape or disk respectively.

We have a dedup NAS box, EMC DD or HP StoreOnce, can we will alter the RMAN script to backup the data to shared folder mounted on Oracle server, while still using NBU to control the backup/restore?

We know that there are SAN client that do similar for SAN connected FC tape drive. How about NFS?

Do share your experience.

Thanks/

Dylan

If Oracle client will only backup itself you need Enterprise Client license - a lot less than Enterprise Server license.

Speak to your local reseller about licensing requirements - capacity license may be best for you.

In short - if you want rman script to write directly to 3rd party appliance, you need to config the Oracle client as media server.

No other way.

I think you can use NDMP backup but not the netbackup to control your RMAN backup.

You can pick your backup files from a NFS/mount path as a normal Filer backup.

You can install media server software on the Oracle server and configure the NFS mount as Basic Disk storage unit.

We call this SAN Media server. Not to be confused with SAN client.

Most effective way to use these appliances is to purchase the relevant license key from the appliance vendor to use the device as OST Advanced disk with vendor plugin.

This way the dedupe fingerprinting is shared by the Oracle media server and only changed data sent to the Appliance.

Additional licensing is needed. Speak to your local reseller.

Why would you backup the data to a shared folder on the Oracle client ?

Oracle is unable to read and understand the image format Netbackup uses. Or am I misunderstanding something ?

Hi, in short, we want to see if we can eliminate the need of media server license. We have several Oracle DB servers here and if all using media server license, it will cost a bomb.

Thanks.

Or bypass everything and dump the oracle database directly to deduplication device via NFS/CIFS (e.g Data Domain). RMAN has no problems wirting backup directly to disc.
