Our master is currently on a 32bit windows server with 6.5.4 installed. Our plan is to upgrade to Windows 2008 64 bit and then reinstall 6.5.4 64bit on the same server. Since we are running low on space on the C: drive where nbu is installed, we plan on adding a D drive and installing nbu there. After installing nbu6.5.4, we will run bprecover to recover the catalog and then upgrade to nbu7. Is this possible, I've seen conflicting information about this.
Also there's a tech note indicating that the upgrade requires 3times as much space because the process creates 2 copies of the database. According the nbu utility that's used to check the size of the database we are only using a couple hundred MBytes, which is also confusing us because the C drive on the system is 139gb and used space is about 107gb and the catalog is approximately 64gb. So the confusion is what is the upgrading making 2 copies of??? I thought the catalog was the database.
Please post the link to the TechNote that you are referring to? EMM database might require extra space for upgrade, but not images. If that was the case, hardly any of us would be able to upgrade!
There are different parts that make up the NBU catalogs:
images & policies in <install-path>\Veritas\NetBackup\db (occupies lots of space) and
emm database in <install-path>\Veritas\NetBackupDB (very small compared to images)
bprecover will always restore to original path: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/301049.htm
3. NetBackup must be installed in the same location on the DR Master Server as it was on the original Master Server
You can follow this TechNote to move NBU to another drive letter:
