Configuration of NAS (FreeNAS) to Windows 2008 Server for NDMP Backups

fmk
Level 3

Hi Guys,

I have a Windows Master & 2 Media Servers with a STK L700 library (1 L700 550v Robot and 4 IBM ULT3580 drives) in the production environment.

I want to configure a Windows 2008 Server as a NDMP host and attach another library to it as a local storage device.

I have a FreeNAS NAS Server that I want to attach to Windows NDMP host to be able to configure NDMP backups. Which protocol do I need to use on the OS level for this? I use network storage of FreeNAS with iSCSI and CIFS for other Windows systems.

Services/Protocols available with FreeNAS  http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Services_Configuration
AFP
CIFS
Directory Services
Dynamic DNS
FTP
iSCSI
NFS
Rsync
S.M.A.R.T.
SNMP
SSH
TFTP
UPS

I want to add this NAS Server to Backup rotation for testing purposes for now, then get the main NetApp Data onTap Server added in NDMP.

FreeNAS does not seem to be supported as NDMP device. See NBU hcl:  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH76495

You will probably have to backup the CIFS share as UNC path in MS Windows policy on NBU server.

NetApp is supported.
