Convert 'User Backup' catalog data to 'User Archive' after the fact?

Hey all,

We have a number of backups that were run as type 'User Backup', and many more that were run as type 'User Archive'.

The catalog differentiates between these two, and keeps them separated such that we have to run searches twice when looking for data.

Since all new jobs for this setup are of type 'User Archive', I am wanting to somehow 'convert' the data in the catalog of type 'User Backup' into 'User Archive', so I can find and restore any of this data with one search.

Is that possible?

If the tool run on the master server, you can run bpimagelist twice to get both type of backup listed.

I have not come across such a function (and I don't think I want such a function). But maybe the community can assist you with the search to easy the issue. Can you explain how you perform the search - using GUI, command line ???

I guess you want the "user backup" and "user archieve" restore selection in the same windows but I think that is not possible. To restore the user backup you have to select the option "restore from Normal Backup" . To restore the archived backup you have to select the "restore from archived backup".

i am looking to modify the data in the catalog, to change these 'user backups' into 'user archives'.

the upshot of doing that is that all backups for this system would be searchable/browsable/restorable via the GUI under 'Restore from Archived Backup', but more importantly, the tools we have written using bplist and bprestore, would work properly.

currently because we have both 'user backups' and 'user archives' in the system, we need to do multiple searches via the GUI or command line to restore something.  I need this to be a single search, not multiple searches.

end users eyes start rolling back in their head when we tell them they need to look for stuff twice, and our homegrown tools are not set up to run two searches, and consolidate/present the results.

so i am looking for a way to alter the data in the catalog itself, to reclassify these backups as archives.

It is 'not supported' to modify the catalog in this way so no attempt should be made to do so.

Certain 'not supported' (not in the manuals) tasks may be justified, in certain circumstances but modifiying the catalog files unfortunately is not one of them.

Just tell them you are doing "comprehensive analysis" instead laugh
