Decommissioning robot - legacy tapes need moved to different master

sirjonsnow

Brief overview:
Two sites (A and B) with their own Masters, Media servers, etc.  Current backups are all to disk, but there are some old backups on tape and in a robot (one for each site).

We are decommissioning the robot in site B, but still need to retain all the tapes that have not yet expired.  Nothing else in site B is being decommissioned, but the only robot and tape drives remaining will be at site A.

Q:
What do I need to do to import catalogs (and anything else needed) to the Master at site A so the remaining robot can be used to restore from the site B tapes?

Depending on number of tapes, there could be a few solutions:

1. with minimal number of tapes it might be practical to import them into Domain A

2. if you don't care about expiration of Site B tapes or can be bothered to recycle tapes manually using the information from Master B you can use the Recovery Without Import approach (https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.100016138.html).

3. nice and easy way - merge two catalogs, this implies consulting egagement from a third party, but will effectively make Master A aware of all backups, tapes and their expiration dates from Master B so the latter can be decommissioned. This could be an expensive option, but works fine if you have a business case for it.

To merge the 2 catalogs will require contracting for NetBackup Consulting Services in order for the backup solution to be supported by NBU Tech Spt going forward. We've used the services before on a couple of migrations and it was well worth the money in the long run.

One of our challenges is carrying data with long retentions from one solution to the next. Try doing this for 62 master backup servers and over 4,000 backup clients and over 65,000 total tapes in inventory. :)

Thanks,
