Device Configution Wizard detects drives in Unusable state

I am trying to configure drives in Netbackup 6.5.4 in SLES 11 and the drives drives are detected as unusable. I have applied the latest device mappings. but that didn't help. The drives are detected on the OS. However, I have noticed that the output of scan -tape has the Device Name "-", but the /dev/nst* and /dev/st* have been created. I have pasted the out of a few commands below. Please assist.

Finally resolved the issue. Was running NBU_6.5.4 and the minimum supported version on SLES 11 ( x86-64 ) is 6.5.5. Upgraded to NBU_6.5.6 and the problem was solved.

Follow the instructions in this TechNote to download and install the latest Device Mappings:

As mentioned in my article, I have already installed the latest Device Mappings, but that didn't solve my problem. Thanks

Hey Denzo,  Is there a possiblity that you have a vendor driver installed, which could be conflicting with Symantec's passthru driver?

Apologies Denzo, you might have noticed that your original post was a bit 'messed up', almost unreadable (it's fixed now).

Have you verified that the device mappings were successfully loaded?

tpext -get_dev_mappings_ver

I have verified that the device mappings were successfully loaded, but I still have the same problem. Please see results below:

sivls008:/usr/openv/volmgr/bin # ./tpext -get_dev_mappings_ver
device mappings version in the EMM database is 1.89
device mappings version from the local file is 1.89
Local device mappings file is up-to-date

I am really puzzled now as to what needs to be done.

I've had another look at your original post - nowhere are the 'nst' device names listed.

For tape drive device files, NetBackup uses only the /dev/nstx files. I realise that you said that the nst device names are there, but NBU does not appear to be detecting these device name.

Maybe give /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/make_scsi_dev another try?

Also read through the Linux chapter of the Device Config Guide to see if there's anything that might have been missed...

Hi Marianne. The /dev/nstx have been created but, Netbackup is not picking them up. See output below:

sivls008:~ # cd /dev
sivls008:/dev # ls -l nst*

crw-rw---- 1 root root 9, 195 Aug 20 15:25 nst3m
sivls008:/dev #

As for the usr/openv/volmgr/bin/make_scsi_dev, I don't think I can use it in my case as I have a 2.6 kernel.

Thanks for your effort though.
