Differences between NetBackup and Backup Exec

David_Jennings

I just a couple of quick questions that I'm hoping someone can help me with. My company is running BE on 3 servers but recently have decided that we want to start encrypting our data when running backups. I know that Netbackup has the Encryption Module and that BE doesn't support encryption, but are there many more differences between the 2 products?

And for those of you using the Encryption Module, how do you find it overall? Are there any problems that I should be aware of prior to purchasing? This would more than likely be installed on a SAN if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks, it was helpful.

If our environment is purely Windows would we be well served to switch to Netbackup? We have no real issues w/ BE, the only one being the lack of support for encryption.

Unfortunately the NetBackup licensing is expensive. Talk with a sales rep for figures.

I figured it would be a bit more expensive than the license for BE. I'll contact the sales dept today and find out.

Can I safely assume that NetBackup builds upon the features of BE 10.0? Certain things that are outlined in the BE for Windows datasheet are not explicitly stated in that for NetBackup (support for VSS, support for Exchange 2003 Sharepoint as ex's). We just want to make sure we don't lose that functionality if we upgrade.

No, your replies have been more than helpful to say the least. You've covered just about everything I had a question for.

I do try to be thorough. I think that NetBackup is the best product out there but it is expensive. Probably because of all the engineering required to be able to run on so many platforms.
