Please any one help me. When  I  try to BMR restore I am getting error message "failed to identify BMR restore phase from bmrenv.ini"

restoration log as follows

Based on the SRT information listed, it shows you have two SRT entries, one a file system (NFS)  based, the second a ISO image CD based (CD_WinPE).

The possible problem I see is the OS version of "NT Server Class 5.2".  That OS version is Windows 2003 and means this must be a Legacy SRT. Please verify this information. If it is not a Legacy SRT, then there is a major issue with the Boot Server, in that the base SRD "wim" file is not at the correct version level.

I also need to know if the backed up client had SFW installed on it when it was backed up. This is very important! If not, then a Legacy SRT is not required.  Use a default Fast Restore SRT to recover the client.  Use the Boot Server Assistant -> Shared Resource Wizard to create  a new non-Legacy SRT. The OS version of the Fast Restore SRT at BMR Version 7.6.0.X is WinPE 3.0, based on Windows 2008 R2.   The SRT created is generic in nature and will recover any and all  of the supported Windows versions. It does not have to match the client OS. This method does not have to access the file "bmrenv.ini" that is at the root of the restore failure. One easy way to determine if the client configuration showed a SFW disk management.  Create a new Fast Restore SRT and update the NBU client software to the same level as the Boot Server.  Then do a "Prepare To Restore" for the restoring client. BMR will only display an SRT version that will work for the given client configuration.  If SFW is not in play, it will display the SRT name of the Fast Restore SRT created. If SFW is in play,it will display the Legacy SRT name (in your case - LBN).

To get exact SRT detail information, run the command "bmrs -o querytree -res database -table SRT -id 1".and reply with the information returned so that I can verify the state and content of the SRT used for the restore.  This will describe the entirety of SRT created, to include version of the BMR Boot Server at the time the SRT was created, version of the OS image, and version of any embedded client software.  The option "-id 1" is because this SRT has a SRT_ID of 1, as noted in the output of the command "bmrs -o list -res SRT".  The last column is a digit with this unique number.

Not sure if already noted but the following article I wrote has information on doing Dissimilar System Restore for Windows clients.

Doing a Dissimilar System Restore (DSR) to new hardware for Windows clients using Bare Metal Restore (BMR) on NetBackup 6.X and 7.X releases.
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH52394

The title is rather wordy and I will be updating that shortly, along with the content of the article for newer functions introduced by the latest releases of BMR. It will also include screen shots to help define the actions need to perform the activity.

This article may of use to you as well, as it describes needed device driver support inserted into an SRT:

Windows Device Driver Requirements for Bare Metal Restore (BMR)
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH181674

Please update this thread with the SRT information and I can help you with this recovery action. It would be good to know what is the hardware make and model of the TARGET system that the restore is going to.

And, yes, I am a BMR expert.

At Q11 - you list the srt again, and not the client.

At Q12 - you list the srt again, and not the config.

.

And at this point - I need to hand off.   Maybe Jamie V might be willing to pick this up?

@manjula - were you able to resolve this yourself?  Or do you still have a problem with it?

There's lots of errors in that restore log.  I'm not sure where to begin.  Thanks for above, at least we know the versions involved.

Can you describe all of the steps that you took to reach the point of the error?  We need to know everything that you did to reach that point.

Is this being done in a test lab?  Or a real working NetBackup environment?

Steps as follows

1) Using vmware vm as netbackup server 7.6.0.4

2) installed same client  version in the HP prolent physical server( windows 2003 sp1_32bit)

3) create a policy a with mark "BMR"

4) got the sucessfull backup to the Local basic disk storage

5) create a boot server

6) register boot server in the master server

7) create SRT using Wizad

8) create a ISO using above SRT

9) write CD using ISO

10) discover the physical properties of backup restore server

11) initilize the and map with original backup server and discover server

12) start the restore  with selecting legercy type

13) got the confugration from the master server and can see the the conigured name from the new physical machine

14) start the resore

15) stop with above error.(all host name are mapped in the hosts file)

The message "Error in extracting the current dos restore phase from bmrenv.ini. phase=-1" indicates that this is a restore using a "Legacy" SRT and not a Fast Restore SRT.  Is this correct?

Use of Legacy SRT is only needed when restoring a BMR client which has SFW software installed. If SFW was not installed on the source system, then use a regular Fast Restore SRT for the recovery.

BTW, if a client has SFW installed fo r the data drives, you ca make use of a normal Fast Restore SRT for the System disks and  non-SFW managed  disks using information in one of the two following TECH articles.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO88823
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH201744

I seem to remember of a known issue for the above error message. I will research and update this thread when I have the details.

Apologies, but I'm not too sure about that - only because I'm no expert at this product.  A know a little, but always never enough.

Anyway - I was kind of hoping that a BMR expert would pick this up - after we'd done the initial fact finding together.  Let's continue to hope so.

In the meantime, could I ask:

Q14) For these three again:

bmrs -operation list -resource srt

bmrs -operation list -resource client

bmrs -operation list -resource config

(...as it looks like the same thign was pasted three time above).

Q15) Above you said "10) discover the physical properties of backup restore server", did you mean you did a discovery of the physical backup client?

Q16) Are you aware that NetBackup can do B2V, i.e. you can convert a backup in to a VM directly, without having to BMR boot.  I can add that the feature is present in my v7.6.0.4 environment, so I would expect this feature to also be available in your v7.6.0.1 environment.  If the feature does exist in your 7.6.0.1 env, then it might be worth trying this first?

Please update this thread with the SRT information and I can help you with this recovery action. It would be good to know what is the hardware make and model of the TARGET system that the restore is going to.

And, yes, I am a BMR expert.
