Do I need the Shared Storage Option in our environment ?

Hello all,

several years ago we bought an EMC-NAS, consisting of 2 filers: a main and a shadow (or fallback) filer.
This NAS has been replaced in the meantime by a larger more scalable version, but also contisting of 2 filers.
We backup over NDMP from our main NAS-filer only and employ 1 master server and 1 media server.
The media server is connected with fibre over a switch to our library, which houses 4 drives.(The first library, purchased together with the first NAS housed 2 drives)

With the purchase of the 1st NAS, we also bought additional Netbackup-licenses to be able to perform backups.
One of them was the Shared Storage Option for 2 drives (that is 2 licenses).

Because of the mentioned setup with 2 filers and 1 master, resp. 1 media server, I am wondering if we need
SSO at all, if not, we can save ourselves the money for maintenance on the 2 licenses.
The Netbackup Shared Storage Guide also states:

The Shared Storage Option is required only if multiple hosts share drives. For example, multiple NDMP hosts may share one or more drives.

Thanks in advance for your reactions!

Kind regards,

Jaap

If you want to share the tape drives between media server and filers or between filers, you need the shared storage option (SSO).

If you dedicate the tape drive to only one host, you don't need the SSO option
