Does NetBackup Master and Media Server Running on Solaris can be used to backup VMware Virtual Environments?

Hi all,

We have an existing Symantec Netbackup Master and Media server running on Sun Solaris environment.  Can it be used to backup our windows environments and especially VMware virtual server environments and their applications like AD, MS Exchange etc via Symantec agents??

We have Symantec Netbackup 7.1 with capacity based licenses and the current media (and master) server is attached to a tape library via FC.

If this cannot be done then, do we need a separate media server running in windows environment with a tape library attached to the new media server?

Please clarify the things.

Thank you in advanced.

For Vmware you need a Windows or Linux backup host. The only requirement is that the backup host must be a NBU client. Best if backup host is also a NBU Media server with datastores zoned to the server to prevent network transfer of backup data. Different backup options are described in NBU for Vmware Admin Guide.

Hi Marianne,

Thanks for the update...

I am just curious to know... what if the other way around....

That is, if we have capacity based license, and there is a Symantec Netbackup Master and Media server on the same host install, can we backup all the windows and VMware environments along with Oracle databases running on SUN / Oracle Solaris (SPARC servers) ??

Please clarify

Yes. You can backup everything to single Master/media server, but you will still need a Windows or Linux client to do VM backups. This can be a VM. Read up in NBU for VM manual about hotadd transport method (as well as other transport methods). Your capacity license allows you as many servers, agents and options as you like. Why not use it to build the best possible backup infrastructure?

Hi Marianne,

I doubt whether you understood my question correctkly.

I was asking is it possible to backup Oracle databases running on AIX and Solaris (SPARC) using a Windows / Linux Netbackup Master & Media server running on the same host provided that we have Capacity based Licenses.

Thanks

The capacity based license do not restrict you in regards to what agents you can use. The capacity provides you access to all options (except Media server encryption). You can also deploy a unlimited number of master and media servers - just you buy the number for "front end TB" required to protect your data.

Netbackup is per default is not dependent on the master/media server OS, meaning you can do "cross OS backup and restore operation" (e.g. backup AIX/Oracle to either a Windows or Linux Master/media server".)

What's possible is listed in the "NetBackup Master Compatibility List"

Yes. You can backup any supported OS and any supported DB to any supported media or master server.

Download OS and agent compatibility lists from the link in Nicolai's post.

Please speak to your Symantec reseller - they should be able to assist you with a proper backup design and not only sell you licenses.
