Domain controller restore

Trying to restore a windows 2003 domain controller in a disaster recovery test. We are using netbackup 6.0MP2. When we restored all of the files and rebooted the server, we receivd an error message that C:\windows\system32\ntoskernel.exe was corrupt. The domain controller was already in directory services recovery mode. Any ideas what we did wrong?

Josh,

The ntoskernel.exe is the running "kernel" of the server, so if you replaced it with a "backup kernel" or one from tape it will not work cause the old kernel is the one with additional modifications to it.

Every time you change add or subtract stuff from you server it mod's the ntoskernel.exe.

Rebuild the server and dont resstore the ntoskernel.exe, just restore the DR stuff. If you have a copy of the new ntoskernel.exe move the other one to the junk pile and replace it with the new one.

Cool....

Thanks for the info. I will let you know how things turn out.

I am unable to exclude the file. NetBackup appears to include it as part of the system state. It does not appear under the C:\windows\system32\ folder.
