Duplicating Tapes from a different Netbackup server

SteveDown

Hi,

For the purpose of shifting data from LTO2 to LTO6 tapes I'm in the process of testing on a dedicated Netbackup 6 server built purely for this task.

The legacy LTO2 tapes were created on numerous servers from around the world, however I have no idea what they were called. I've tested the import process from a single server I built earlier this week and that worked as one would expect. Now, if I create a backup on a different server and import it to the second server this works fine. When I use Catalog in order to find and duplicate the tape I get a message stating the following:

"INF - unexpected return value from db_IMAGEreceive: operation requested by an invalid server 37"

This leads me to believe that I can't simply import tapes from an unkown system, and subsequently duplicate them on another?

Cheers,

Steve

The screenshot above shows no selection criteria.

I was hoping to see the media id selected and a date range that starts well before the date of phase 1 import.

To start from scratch, you will need to expire all images associated with this media id.

It should be possible.

What GUI do you use - Windows or Java admin GUI ?

A "operation requested by an invalid server 37" is  Netbackup way of telling "Permission denied". Usally server names goofs or name resoloution issues.

I'm using Windows Server 2003 with Netbackup 6.0.

It is possible, we ahve done/do it for almost all our remote sites, from LTO2-LTO4 to LTO5

When you saying imported is that both phase 1 & 2 ?

The standard questions: Have you checked: 1) What has changed. 2) The manual 3) If there are any tech notes or VOX posts regarding the issue

Looks like I have only completed this in part. I just clicked on Catalog.... Actions\Initiate Import.... and that was all I did.

I just tried the next phase and attempted the Catalog Import search. I get the same error.

Update.... If I change the Media ID to <All> it finds the tape I imported. If I specifically select the media I imported earlier it comes up with the error. A bit odd?

When performing the Import, I get the following:

11/06/2015 14:36:44 - begin Import
11/06/2015 14:36:44 - Error bpimport(pid=3240) db_IMAGEreceive() failed: operation requested by an invalid server (37)
11/06/2015 14:36:44 - end Import; elapsed time: 00:00:00
found no images or media matching the selection criteria(190)

I thought the initial import had worked because it said Successfully Completed, upon closer inspection I got the following:

11/06/2015 14:10:09 - begin Import
11/06/2015 14:10:09 - started process bptm (3764)
11/06/2015 14:10:11 - started process bptm (3764)
11/06/2015 14:10:11 - mounting AG10L2
11/06/2015 14:10:09 - requesting resource AG10L2
11/06/2015 14:10:09 - granted resource AG10L2
11/06/2015 14:10:09 - granted resource LTO3-0
11/06/2015 14:11:09 - mounted; mount time: 00:00:58
11/06/2015 14:11:12 - Error bptm(pid=3764) ERR - db_getIMAGE() failed for policy Test-Backup and schedule Full, error = operation requested by an invalid server, skipping.
11/06/2015 14:12:23 - end Import; elapsed time: 00:02:14
the requested operation was successfully completed(0)

Can you show us all the parameters entered in the import screen? Import has nothing to do with original master/media server

I've managed to successfully import the tape, however when I attempt the next phase and search the Catalog I get the following: INF - Found no images matching the selection criteria that were ready for phase 2 import.

If I search on Verify or Duplicate I can see the tape, just not for Import.

This is a bit strange because despite the import failing yesterday, I was able to search and find the imported tape name.

Below details the successful import:

11/06/2015 16:57:29 - begin Import
11/06/2015 16:57:32 - started process bptm (3652)
11/06/2015 16:57:32 - started process bptm (3736)
11/06/2015 16:57:35 - started process bptm (3652)
11/06/2015 16:57:35 - mounting AG10L2
11/06/2015 16:57:32 - requesting resource AG10L2
11/06/2015 16:57:33 - granted resource AG10L2
11/06/2015 16:57:33 - granted resource LTO3-0
11/06/2015 16:58:35 - mounted; mount time: 00:01:00
11/06/2015 16:58:35 - positioning AG10L2 to file 1
11/06/2015 16:58:35 - positioned AG10L2; position time: 00:00:00
11/06/2015 16:58:35 - begin reading
11/06/2015 17:00:53 - end reading; read time: 00:02:18
11/06/2015 17:00:59 - end Import; elapsed time: 00:03:30
the requested operation was successfully completed(0)

I'd like to perform a fresh Phase 1 import of the tape, but because this has been completed once already the process doesn't commit the data again. Is there a way to reset this so Netbackup believes this is being processed for the first time?

Import phase 1 started Fri Jun 12 2015 08:59:28
08:59:28 INF - Create DB information for media id AG10L2.
08:59:28 INF - Initiation of bptm process to phase 1 import media id AG10L2 was successful.
08:59:30 INF - Waiting for mount of media id AG10L2 on server epany-archive for reading.

09:00:31 INF - Found existing image information for client veritas-backup, policy Test-Backup, and schedule Full, done on 06/11/2015 12:47:09.
09:00:31 WRN - Cannot import client veritas-backup, policy Test-Backup, and schedule Full, copy 1 fragment 1 already exists. Skipping this image.

The earlier import that was found in the log above was performed when the process wasn't functioning correctly, and this leads me to believe that this might be causing the current issue.

The screenshot is too small to see any details.

I am battling to understand which part of the import worked and which part not.

You managed to perform 'Initiate Import' (phase 1), right?

The successful output that you posted above - was that 'Initiate' (phase 1) or the acual Import (phase 2)?

The 'Initial Import' is now working, however the very first time I performed an import, it failed. Per log below.

Import phase 1 started Thu Jun 11 2015 14:46:55
14:46:55 INF - Create DB information for media id AG10L2.
14:46:55 INF - Initiation of bptm process to phase 1 import media id AG10L2 was successful.
14:46:58 INF - Waiting for mount of media id AG10L2 on server epany-archive for reading.
14:47:59 ERR - db_getIMAGE() failed for policy Test-Backup and schedule Full, error = operation requested by an invalid server, skipping.

14:49:11 INF - Creation of database information for import of media id AG10L2 complete.

I rebooted the server and this appears to have fixed the 'Initial Import' problem. Per log below.

Import phase 1 started Fri Jun 12 2015 07:42:41
07:42:41 INF - Create DB information for media id AG10L2.
07:42:41 INF - Initiation of bptm process to phase 1 import media id AG10L2 was successful.
07:42:43 INF - Waiting for mount of media id AG10L2 on server epany-archive for reading.

07:43:45 INF - Found existing image information for client veritas-backup, policy Test-Backup, and schedule Full, done on 06/11/2015 12:47:09.
07:43:45 WRN - Cannot import client veritas-backup, policy Test-Backup, and schedule Full, copy 1 fragment 1 already exists. Skipping this image.

07:44:57 INF - Creation of database information for import of media id AG10L2 complete.

The Phase 1 import 'appears' good, however I believe the first failed attempt might be causing a problem. When searching the Catalog with the Import option selected, nothing is found. This is preventing me from implementing Phase 2.

I am used to NBU date rage in this format:

mm/dd/yyyy.

We can also see this date range in the output above:

07:43:45 INF - Found existing image information for client veritas-backup, policy Test-Backup, and schedule Full, done on 06/11/2015 12:47:09.

The backup was done on 11 June, right?

So, it seems that you have specified a date range in the future -  between 6 August (08/06) and 6 December (12/06).

Try date range in mm/dd/yyyy format.

Yes, the backup was performed this week, the date format is correct... if I search on any of the other Actions such as Verify or Duplicate, it finds the AG10L2 media.

Try this date range:

06/08/2015 to 06/12/2015   (8 - 12 June)
instead of
08/06/2015 to 12/06/2015   (6 Aug to 6 Dec).

Nothing is found. I haven't run this command, yet... bpexpdate -m AG10L2 -d 0

** Update ** I've run the command and rerun the import, I can now see the required tape and Phase 2 is working. Thanks for your help this week.
