Duplication of Data

Since there is a lifecycle of data being loaded on tape (in our case 13 weeks) why one should go for such
solutions if data is not recoverable beyond 13 weeks?  Is there a need of duplication? If yes then  how can i go for Duplication of existing data & one which i heard is Veritas Netbackup Vault. and what is the process for duplication in vault.
What you would suggest for such challenges?

Regards
Abhay

Only you can know if there's a need for duplication.  Some of the reasons that you might think so:
  • Protection in case of media failure, media loss, or theft
  • Can put data in multiple locations in case of disaster
  • Can put data in multiple locations for faster recovery at multiple sites
If your data is only on one tape and that tape has a problem, then your data may not be recoverable.

NetBackup Vault is a rich solution for automating tape duplication, tape movement, and reporting.  You can also do duplications with the 'bpduplicate' command line.  It just requires more manual work on your part.

If you do your original backup to disk - makes for fast restores- but you only have room on disk for 3 days.

The duping to tape (Here is where Vault works good) you get a copy to tape that  you can send off-site, because you cannot send a disk backup off site and proper management says you SHOULD have a copy off-site.

Now the backup on disk expires after 3 days, then you already have a copy on tape that you can restore from.  And in your case the images on the tape expire in 13 weeks.
