Re: EMC NDMP Restore file to another location Netapp/Windows

hi @barakdmax

You cannot restore a EMC to a Netapp for that case onto any other vendors device.

NDMP is not a data format, it is more a control protocol. Each vendor has it own NDMP data stream format.

My recommendation is to keep the EMC around until all backup has expired.

Best Regards
Nicolai

@barakdmax

Unfortunately not possible. You can only restore back to the same NDMP vendor type.
This is due to differences in the NDMP protocol deployed by the various NAS/NDMP vendors.

See NBU for NDMP manual:

https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/doc/24427212-127304472-0/id-SF940141104-127304472

The destination host must be an NDMP host compatible with the data format of the source. (The source and destination must be of the same NAS vendor type.)

My suggestion :

Perform a Windows-type backup of CIFS path before the filer is powered off.
See this TN: https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.100023548

Your other option is to look for EMC simulator.

First thanks !

I have another question

If i change the name for the Emc (NDMP) and i cant restore any more from the old backup.

There are any solution for that ?

Where are the tape drives connected to? To the NDMP host or regular media server?

You will need to configure connection to the new name as if it's a new NDMP client.

Once you have done that, run a small test backup to confirm that all is good.

You should then be able to do an alternate client restore.
Select the original name as Source Client and the new name as Destination.

If the NDMP host's tape drives were used, there are additional steps to redirect to the new name.

Re: EMC NDMP Restore file to another location Netapp/Windows

when i try to restore from my internal disk storage i got an error

1: (10) allocation failed
"Error nbjm (pid=6328) NBU status: 2108, EMM status: Requested NDMP machine does not have credentials or is not configured in NetBackup"

Beacuse the name changeing, there is a posibale to restore files/folders ?

@barakdmax

Have you read my previous post?

Re: EMC NDMP Restore file to another location Netapp/Windows

Yes i do,

I have two backup that i perform:

1. Local storage.

2.Tape - are connected directly to the master server.

I ask about option 1, i perform a backup after that we change the emc name to another.

When i want to perform restore i got the error from the previous post.

Master server storage is good - nothing needed to change there.

The rest as per my previous post:

You will need to configure connection to the new name as if it's a new NDMP client.
(i.e. add credentials, test connectivity and credentials, add policy)

Once you have done that, run a small test backup to confirm that all is good.

You should then be able to do an alternate client restore.
Select the original name as Source Client and the new name as Destination.

Re: EMC NDMP Restore file to another location Netapp/Windows

So, is /emc/restore/ a folder on the root volume or a data volume?

Be sure to select a data volume.

Re: EMC NDMP Restore file to another location Netapp/Windows

it is a Data volume

I thing its was in the past when i try to restore a file and issue was in the slash

/emc/restore or should to be \emc/restore

Re: EMC NDMP Restore file to another location Netapp/Windows

Not possible.

NAS filers have a Unix-based filesystem with only '/' in the paths.
You cannot mix / and \ on a Unix filesystem.

As a matter of interest - which EMC hardware?
Isilon or Celerra?

Re: EMC NDMP Restore file to another location Netapp/Windows

Having moved from EMC Celerra to Isilon - which also cannot restore, you are stuck.

If you need to keep the data, what I did was mount them NFS and run an NFS backup. Takes longer. But can restore anywhere.

Since you are on windows, you will have to CIFS them.

Your old backups can be expired, since you cannot restore them...

Re: EMC NDMP Restore file to another location Netapp/Windows

@barakdmax

Could you please give us an update on the situation?

Your 1st question was about restoring to another type of filer or to Windows.
Then you asked about restoring to a renamed EMC filer.
Last update was a failed restore attempt because the filer believed that you had insufficient permission to restore to a root volume.

Please give us an update?
