but for some reason wont scan in the drives and create the storage unit on the GUI. Everything is in place, software, licensing, hostfile entries, bp.bonf entries, it has been added to EMM as a media server and the processes all start up. It shows up in emm as a media serevr active for disk and tapes

What EMM issue? Are you getting error messages? What error messages?

Have you checked and confirmed comms between master and media servers with these commands?
nbemmcmd -listhosts -verbose
nbemmcmd -getemmserver

Did you run 'scan' on all media servers to ensure all devices are visible?

Why NBU 6.5?
Are you aware of the fact that all 6.x versions reached EOSL in Oct 2012?

Comms issue.

Please post output of :

nbemmcmd -listhosts -verbose
nbemmcmd -getemmserver

Check the following:

Correct /etc/hosts.
If you are using FQDN in ANY hosts file entry, ensure this is used on media and master server - this includes own hosts entry.

I normally recommend entries such as:

Master:

IP master master.fqdn loghost
IP media1 media1.fqdn

Media1:

IP media1 media1.fqdn loghost
IP master master.fqdn

Double-check bp.conf entries on master and media server.
