Error (96)

I have a backup that used 5 tapes and then failed because we had no available media. Can these 5 tapes be used to restore files even if the backup failed? If the backup fails with an error 96 does the retention on the tapes get restored back to before the backup started? Or will they remain full until the retention is meet. All 5 tapes are Full. We use Veritas 5.1.

Thank you,
David

When a backup fails to complete, no matter how many tapes it may have used.
The image is expired. The tapes will become free the nex time netbackup goes through its cleanup process.

you cannot use netbackup to restore from a failed backup attempt.Message was edited by:

NetBackup does not let you restore from a failed backup. You could try restore using the tar but in your case backup spanned over 5 tapes so tar is not an option here. NetBackup assign retention to Backup images not to media being said that there is no impact on expiration of tape. If these tapes were full before the backup then these will remain Full but if these got filled during the failed backup, you should still be able to use these tapes.

You can run available_media to find the status on tape.

Hi David,

Bod is right, you can't find any backup image id for a failed backup for restoration. If those tapes aren't reuse again, you can try using "tar -tf " (after loading the tape into drive manually) to see whether you can list the backed up file in the tape. If yes, it maybe likely to restore those listed files.
