All errors are on the same drive using different tapes.

Error log 1:

You can also confirm by having a look at /usr/openv/netbackup/db/media/errors.

Is this post about the same issue as this one? https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/error-code-84-0

Hi All,

Thank you. Kindly find the below tpclean o/p. Last week only we cleaned the tape drive. Now its showing Needs cleaning. Am I need to increase the Frequency?

As Marianne van den Berg said all the logs are showing a single drive [HP.ULTRIUM4-SCSI.003]. Morning only I verified the Logs. This is different post, last time we have cleaned the tape drive and it was given us temporary solution.

Rather use TapeAlert so that cleaning will happen automatically when the cleaning flag is raised.

Cleaning can be enabled at robotic level (see your robot documentation) or by adding cleaning tapes in normal slots and config them as cleaning tapes (HC_CLN) in the None pool.

The fact that your drives need cleaning that often make them suspect. Slow throughput will result in 'shoe-shining' which will wear out your tape drives prematurely.

Hi Mubarack,

With regards to your error, may I know what tape library you are using? You may used its Tape Library own GUI (if any) to clean the drive. Ensure that you have a cleaning tape on the library.

1 . On NBU Admin Console > Device Monitor > (Refresh GUI) > Locate Drive Name with "NEEDS CLEANING" Cleaning Comment > Right Click > Drive Details > Take note "Robot Drive Number"

2. On the Tape Library GUI, Go to the "Drives" > "Drive Summary" > Locate Robot Drive Number that appear on the "Drive Details" on NBU Admin Console > Locate "Clean" tab/button > Initiate Cleaning.

NOTE: a. It is recommended to do the cleaning when tape drive is empty.

           b. Please locate the drive cleaning on the tape library GUI if the mention about is not found. Tape library GUI mention above is base on a IBM tape library.

3. After CLEAN is done on the Tape Library GUI, go back to the NBU Admin Console > Device Monitor > (Refresh GUI) > Drive Cleaning > Reset Mount Time > It will take couple of seconds or minutes > Refresh GUI > "NEEDS CLEANING" Cleaning Comment must be okay after the activity.

Hope this note will help you.

Thanks

Do not clean drives from Library console

always do clean drives from Netbackup console as suggested above

Hi Yogesh,

We are using sl500 tape library. And cleaning is enabled for tape library level. While I ran the cleaning for NBU console its ending with error code 800.

Hi Mubarack,

Did you try my recommendation? does sl500 does a web console or gui? I have attached sample screenshot for the web console of the library to which I'am dealing to on my previous post. And follow the steps, please let me know the result. thanks

Hi Nesel,

Have tried you recommentation, But still error code 84 persist after cleaning too. As Marianne saids, probelem is with a single drive. We brought down the drive and now backups are running with other three drives. We have raised request with the vendor to upgrade the drive.  said the

Any feedback on this?

Have you been able to resolve this problem?

Tape drive replaced or repaired?

Hi,

please try to write without NBU to the Drive/Tape.

perhapes the drive is crashed and writes bad blocks.

for example:

write 50GB with "HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools"
