Seems there's a fix in 6.0 MP7: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/308512.htm

Some extracts from README:
A change was made to stop installing msvcr71.dll and msvcp71.dll into the VxFI\bin directory.

After applying 6.0 MP4 on Windows 2003 machines with DFS (Distributed File System) configured, the bpbkar32.exe process would fault when backing up Shadow_Copy_Components.

Hi Marianne,

Thanks, Will the master server 6.0MP4 support if I upgrade only the client to 6.0MP7 or do i need to upgrade both master and client to 6.0MP7?

Any other fix with out upgrade the master and client?

Thiru

You will have to patch the master server first, then the client(s).
A higher level client is not supported.
I have seen on the odd occation that a higher level client managed to back up successfully, but restores failed.

BUG REPORT: A fault occurs in bpbkar.exe after applying NetBackup 6.0 MP4, when backing up shadow copy components.
Details:
Bug: ETrack 929910  "Faulting application bpbkar32.exe" events on shadow copy components after applying NetBackup 6.0 Maintenance Pack 4 (MP4) Symptom(s): A client side issue has been identified in Veritas NetBackup (tm) 6.0, Maintenance Pack 4 (MP4) where the bpbkar32.exe process faults under the following conditions:
  • Distributed File System (DFS) is configured and used on the client
  • The client is running a version of Windows (Such as 2003 or XP) that supports shadow copy components..
  • "Shadow Copy Components:\" or "ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES" is selected for backup.
As a result, the backup will end in a Status 13 (file read failed). Log Files:   Event Viewer Application log Faulting application bpbkar32.exe, version 6.0.20006.1102, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.2.3790.2756, fault address 0x00015e02 Workaround: Any of the following workarounds may be applied: 1. Do not use the "Shadow Copy Components:\" or "ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES" directives on Windows Clients running 6.0 MP4 with DFS configured and used.  Instead, backup drive letters or paths only.  Note that the entire OS is not protected when the client is backed up in this manner, because the shadow copy components are skipped. 2. Rollback to Veritas NetBackup (tm) 6.0, Maintenance Pack 3 (MP3) on the client.  If the client is also a Master or Media Server, it is not recommended to perform the rollback, due to issues addressed by the 6.0 MP4 binaries at the Master and Media Server level.
3. Disable DFS (Distributed File System) on the client.  To do so, launch Computer Management and go into Services. Find the service named Distributed File System and first Stop the service, then Disable the service.
ETA of Fix: Symantec has acknowledged that the above-mentioned issue (ETrack 929910) is present in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned at the end of this article.  Symantec is committed to product quality and customer satisfaction. This issue is currently being considered by Symantec to be addressed in NetBackup 6.0, Maintenance Pack 5.  Please note that Symantec reserves the right to remove any fix from the targeted release if it does not pass quality assurance tests or introduces new risks to overall code stability.   Symantec's plans are subject to change and any action taken by you based on the above information or your reliance upon the above information is made at your own risk. Upgrade to NBU 6.0 MP7 will be better option.

Update the Master and Media servers first to NBU 6.0 MP7 and then the Clients to NBU 6.0 MP7
