Right now I have my VM backups configured for "enable file recovery from backup". The backup goes to my msdp first then tape via slp. My question is....when the image exires from disk, will I still be able to do file level recovery from the copy on tape?
Netbackup 7.6.0.1 on win20008r2, vSphere ver 5.1.0, all vms are win2003&2008.

File level restore for VMware is not GRT (which require disk) so this should be possible.
Also the Netbackup VMware guide on page 157 does not mention disk is required for single file restore

It is possible to perform file level recovery from a VM image backup either from disk backup image or tape backup image.
It requires NetBackup client should be installed on the specific VM.

I guess I will do a backup to disk, dupe it to tape, let the disk image expire, then try to restore an individual file from tape.

There is no problem at all with this - as pointed out it is not GRT in the usual sense - you could just as easily back up directly to tape - no need for disk at all
If the original client does not have a NetBackup client installed you will need to do the restore elsewhere but other than that there is no problem
