Flashbackup for AIX

Sid1987

Hi Techiz,

Couldn't find much specifically for AIX in flashbackup. When I select Auto method for snapshot the policy says unable to create snapshot with auto method when I hit ok to policy, and I thought auto method decides the snapshot method at the time of backup not creating policy. I couldn't find any suitable snapshot method as it has jfs2 FS not Veritas fs so I can use VxFS. What to do.

I tried backing up the raw partition with standard policy type to ensure the path is correct and it begins writting so we are good with the path. Please find below the piece of bpfis logs.

Symantec only support flashbackup on AIX with VxFS.

This is from the Snapshot client admin guide page 45

NetBackup 7.6 or later client software must be installed on clients. For AIX and
Linux clients, the client data must be in a VxFS file system.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH126901

You can test Storage Foundation (and VxFS) free of charge using Storage Foundation Basic

Thanks Nicolai,

So there is now way I can backup a jfs2 FS on AIX through flashbackup, then what would you suggest in achieving block level backup, Moreover I am trying this because performance is very degraded for AIX systems where data is more than 50 or 100GB and they have huge number of files. What would you suggest as we are getting very low throughput.

Thanks

Sid

You can backup raw devices with normal Standard policy, but you need to ensure that no I/O takes place during backup. Best to unmount the filesystem before backup starts. This type of backup does not allow file-level restore. More info about raw device backup and restore in NBU Admin Guide I.

Using flashbackup on a system already showing performance problems is not a lasting solution after my opinion. You will likely have performance issues with flashbackup as well.

You need to go backup to the AIX admin and tell you need he/she assistance with performance issues and the many files.

There are a number of tech notes from Symantec assisting with performance issues

One good place to start is the

Symantec NetBackup Backup Planning and Performance Tuning Guide Release 7.5 and Release 7.6

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC7449

Backup of small files is/has always been a issues. This is not saying you can't do somthing about it.

First test the file system according to this tech note, this will give you the absolute maximum speed the file system can be read:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO56131

Try the GEN_DATA directive as well - GEN_DATA work like any "normal" backup but data is generated in memory and stored as data. This is good to test the entire infrastructure both OS - network - netbackup - tape drive.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH75213

Since all backup speed depend on the underlying infrastructure there is not direct software setting that will resolve a performance issue.

NB: Did you configure NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS / SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS on the media server(s) ?

Tweak #1 for all backup related tasks

Thanks Nicolai,

I will go through them, Yes we have Buffer values set on media server, interesting fact I observed while backing up windows 2008 master server as client to windows 2008 media servers, i checked performance on different values for NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS and I saw better through put on 128 than 256 having SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS as 524288.

I believe the question about Flashbackup was answered, right?

Probably best to start a new discussion for advice on backup of lots of small files on AIX JFS2 filesystem....
