Frequency vs. Calendar

Dan_Giberson

As part of my recent troublehshooting efforts I heard several comments on Frequency being better than calendar based scheduling. I would like to hear your opinions on this as I'm still on the fence as to whether or not to convert to frequency. Any comments would be appreciated.

I am a big fan of frequency scheduling. We have some really large environments where "full backup during the weekend" will never have a change of succeeding and individual calender scheduling will be a nightmare.

That said I think you need to make a choice. For consistency you need to select a default and stick to that selection. If calender based is right for you - go and do that. But if you select frequency - fine, good choice.

In the end, I think is a question of strategy and what work best for you.

I use both. Do whichever one you prefer. One is not necessarily better than the other. I wouldn't bother changing existing schedules. It used to be that you couldn't use both types in the same policy but that is no longer the case.

Most of us 'old school' users still prefer Frequency based backups for Daily and Weekly schedules and Calendar for Monthly and Yearly schedules.

I still don't like Calendar schedules for daily backups because we still see too many issues with windows crossing midnight.

Have a look at David Chapa's excellent article about Frequency based schedules:
