Here media id 000045 has no images (everything expired long ago), but remains assigned because of FROZEN state.

I have the same issue where all of the images on a frozen tape have expired. I now have a frozen tape that says it's still assigned but with no valid images on it. So how do I unfreeze the tape?

It is simply not possible for images to expire from frozen media.  Something else must have happened.  Maybe the media was once written to just fine, and had images, and they expired naturally, and then NetBackup attempted to re-use the tape, and then found that the media is bad, and so froze the tape - something like that, or something else, who knows... anyway, NetBackup itself never expires images from frozen media, this is a fundamental characteristic of NetBackup - and so, like I said, some other set of circumstances or actions must have taken place.

How to unfreeze media is documented here:

I run "bpmedialist -summary -brief " and email the output to myself everyday.

You can see output like this:

*******************************************************************************
MEDIA SUMMARY FOR SERVER GROUP All_Servers ON Tue Feb 11 11:19:05 2020
*******************************************************************************

ACTIVE FULL SUSPENDED FROZEN IMPORTED WORM BE_MEDIA ENCRYPTED
122 4004 6195 0 0 0 0 0

If you go to the GUI, Media and Device Management, and select Media, right click and filter for starts with "FRO" it will display your frozen tapes. Once you determine WHY they are frozen, you can right click and unfreeze them.

@ChrysHandy1

I believe the 2015 post was answered.

Images on tape expire when their natural expiration date is reached - unless someone has manually expired the images.

As explained, tapes remain FROZEN even when all images have expired, because NBU had reason to believe that something was wrong with the tape the last time it was use.
