Frozen lto2 tape with Ultrium3 drive

Hi everyone,

I have the following problem, maybe someone could help. I have a Library/Robot with two drives. One is an Ultrium2 and the other an Ultrium3. As all my tapes are lto2 and I want to use only one big pool of tapes, I decided to configure under Netbackup the Ultrium3 drive as an Ultrium2, so Netbackup sees both drives as Ultrium2.
The problem is that if I want to use the tapes that are already in the library, when the Ultrium3 loads the tapes, that tapes gets frozen.

04/15/2008 14:36:43 - granted resource HP.ULTRIUM3-SCSI.000
04/15/2008 14:36:43 - granted resource computer-hcart2-robot-tld-0
04/15/2008 14:36:45 - mounting A00052
04/15/2008 14:37:03 - Error bptm (pid=8260) FREEZING media id A00052, Medium identifiers do not match

But if I put a new tape (same density lto2), the new Ultrium3 will write to it without problems.

So, the question is, can I use Ultrium3 drives as if were an Ultrium2? I know is not a wise option, but I wanted to do until I change the old Ultrium2 drive for another Ultrium3, and all the tapes to lto3.

Thanks!!!

you can use ULT2 tapes in a ULT3 drives.

UTL3 tapes cannot be used in a ULT2 tape drive, they are not backward compatable.

What you're trying to do seems completly reasonable.

I'd look at the bptm logs for the same time and see if you get some additional information about that tape.
