Re: GRT restore from a Full DAG Exchange Backup

@ashrafshahin

The log and screenshots show no errors.
The log is bpcd that shows successful connection.
Screenshot 1 shows restore In Progress (with some previous failures).
Screenshot 2 restore has connected successfully to the client.

Can you show us what happens after the 'connected' message? (Easiest if you copy the text in Job details).

To troubleshoot restore failure, you will also need tar log on Exch client.

Can you tell us exact NBU version on NBU server and Exch clients?
And Exch version?
I noticed that bpcd log is reporting NBU 7.1 - I vaguely remember that there was a bug with older versions and GRT restore. I will see if I can find it if you tell us the versions.

Are you aware that NBU 7.1 is no longer supported?

Re: GRT restore from a Full DAG Exchange Backup

I don't see a question. Did something fail? If so, do you have job details?

A schema change in Exchange 2010 SP1 necessitated an update to NetBackup. If you have NetBackup 7.1 GA, GRT backup and restore cannot find the correct mailbox alias for any Exchange version after 2010 GA. You should have 7.1.0.4. I think this was the version where the master server had to also be on the same update release version as the Exchange clients for the GRT browse to work. It was a long time ago.

For Exchange 2013, you need at least NetBackup 7.6.0.3. I think you need 7.7.3 for Exchange 2016.

As @Marianne says, we also made progressive improvements to Exchange GRT after its origin in NetBackup 6.5.4. I think it's pretty solid in the currently supported NetBackup versions, namely 7.7 and up.

Re: GRT restore from a Full DAG Exchange Backup

Let's take Exchange out of the picture for a moment. Can you back up and restore a file on the CAS and each of the mailbox servers?

With Exchange, can you perform a restore to RDB?

For your GRT restore, can you follow the restore through the bprd and bpbrm logs? Look for BPRESTORE in the bprd log. You should see two bprd processes, a parent and a child. The parent job executes bpresolver on the DAG's representative server. Can you find a bpresolver log on any of the clients? You can figure out the representative server by running Failover Cluster Manager on any of the mailbox servers.

Before NetBackup 7.6, bpresolver needed better privileges than LocalSystem. We required you to execute all of the following services as a user account that's a member of Organization Management or Domain Administrators: NetBackup Client Service, NetBackup Legacy Client Service, NetBackup Legacy Network Service.

If your restore gets that far, the bpresolver log tells you what CAS it chose. Make sure this is the CAS you expect. We had customer configurations where a different CAS was associated with the database for the target mailbox.
