Have a doubt

Hi All,

This is simple a query,

1) is it possible for one master/media(6.5.6) server(solaris10) to have more than 1 tape library(StorageTek L700) attached to it?

2) if yes, then is it possible to take a downtime for maintenance of one particular library without affecting the other libraries and backups.

3) if answer to 2nd question is yes too, then how should i proceed without affecting the backups going on that particular tape library.

1. Not a problem as long as you have the licenses and suitable infrastructure (SCSI / SAS / Fibre) to support it

2. If fibre attached then you will probably get away with connecting it whilst the other library is in use

3. To configure it in NetBackup will need a device manager re-start - so you need to do this at a time when backups / duplications are not running.

Safest all round to find a down time wondow to do this

Hope this helps

When you set up your storage units - if they point to only one lib then when that lib is down you would not be able to do backups.

but you can work around this with Storage Unit Groups - where you create a storage unit to liba and a storage unit to libb - then create a Storage unit group that has liba/libb

you might also want to create a group that has libb/liba

then even out the usage of the groups between your policies - this way on a normal day half of your backups would go to liba and half would go to libb - if either lib is offline - the group would force the other lib to do the backup.    You have to be careful with this and make sure that a policy cannot use up all drives in liba and libb and leave not drive open for other jobs.

But even with this you would have an issue with restores - if the tape you need to restore from is in the down lib it will wait for the tape. - the only way around that would be to remove the tape from the down lib - change the tape to standalone status - then inject it into the running lib.

@J.Hinchicliffe-- thanks for ur reply, i was also thinking the same to create storage unit groups between two libraries and use them in policies. But i was not sure whether we can configure storage unit groups between different libraries connecting to same host.

You can add ANY stu in stug.

Please read up in Admin Guide1 about the available failover policies in stug.

Although multiple robots can be added to master server, please do not overload your master by adding too many tape drives. How many tape drives? Do you have media servers to 'spread' the load?
