How SLP retention works

KS2
Level 5

We have a SLP with three operations -

1. Backup copy with 1 month of FIXED retention on disk

2. Duplicate copy with FIXED infinite retention on tape

3. Duplicate copy with 1 month of FIXED retention on DR site.

Can someone please let us know incase of some library issues we are not able to complete the 2nd copy on tape till one month.

What will happen to primary backup copy on disk?

Will it expire or it will be there on disk until the child copy on tape with infinite retention is completed?

no it will not expire...

if hte copy 2 is not able to make by any reason.. copy 1 will not expire untill the next copy will get duplicated or the longest retenction is reached.

so in your case..if the copy 2 is not able to make .. the copy one will never expire as you set infinite retenction for it.

the SLP keep on trying to do the duplication... it will never quite..

unless admin did the manaully to stop the  SLP process...

read the below white to understand more about SLP

First copy will set to infity unless it is duplicated, so if your 1st copy is not duplicated it will never expire and will remain there unless it gets duplicated.

Even if the primary copy has fixed retention on the disk?

Correct.

The infinite retention until all copies have completed is documented in NBU Admin Guide I:  http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5159

Chapter 14, page 498:

The successful completion of copies is important because an SLP does not allow
a copy to be expired before all copy operations in the SLP are complete. NetBackup
changes the retention period of a copy to Infinity until all copies are created. After
all copies are complete, the retention returns to the level as set in the policy.

yes... fixed retenction is applicable only when it successfully completes the duplicate copy.. it not it will treat it as a fixed  retenction untill it get compleated with duplication job.

because SLP is to ensure that the image is avaliable through out the life cycle that is defnied.. and it will keep on trying untill it achives it..
